Question about 2003 Oldsmobile Alero

1 Answer

Oldsmobile alternator doesn't work after starting car.. Replaced both alternator and battery atleast 2 times already.. Don't know what the problem is. Checked all fuses, wires, stereo, grounds, etc. Read online that connection to battery is faulty and should add a second wire connected to the battery, if anyone can explain further on this, it'd be much appreciated..

THE RED SMALL POSITIVE BATTERY FEED WIRE COULD BE BROKEN THAT GOES TO BACK OF ALTERNATOR.CHECK TO SEE IF POWER GOING TO THE WIRE.IT NOT POSITIVE BATTERY SMALL FEED CABLE BROKEN.OR YOU HAVE BLOWN FUSE LINK.IF ALL IS GOOD YOU COULD HAVE PCM PROBLEMS YOUR FIELD CONTROL CIRCUIT PART OF THE PCM CIRCUIT.HAVE VECHICLE SCANNED TO LOOK FOR ALTERNATOR PCM FAULT. AFTER YOU INSTALL NEW ALTERNATOR DONT CRANK THE CAR UNTIL YOU GET A SCANNER AND ERASE TROUBLE CODE FIRST BECAUSE THE PCM THINK OLD ALTERNATOR STILL IN VECHICLE AND WILL CAUSE CHARGING PROBLEMS.

Is it the battery or the alternator

All the battery does is supply power to the starter to crank the engine over. The alternator doesn't start working until after the engine is started. It supplies electrical power to the engine after it has started and also recharges the battery. If the engine is cranking over but not starting it is neither the alternator or the battery. Check for spark and fuel pressure your most likely missing one of these.

it is the regulator that is the problem
a battery will need 14.5-14.8 volts dc to charge and a fully charged battery in good condition will read 13.2 on a multimeter
as you say the regulator is in the ecm so get a good replacement from the wreckers or junk yard or get a reconditioned ecm for those shops that can recondition/exchange

you need a draw test done on the car to start to diagnois the problem.it can take a few days to find the problem and should be done by a tech that knows how to check for electrical draws as its not an easy job to do and if you don`t know how to do this you may not find the problem or may jump to the wrong conclusion.

I have a 97 Ford Expedition. Every time I go to crank up it won't crank I would have to get a jump. And I'd just bought that battery a couple of months ago. Then when I took it to be checked out I...

ok, first, once the vehicle is started, the alternator should take over the functions of the car,, not the battery , the battery should charge during this time, ( car running) if the alternator is having to supply to much juice to the battery the whole car suffers, and the battery never fully charges . Just because the battery says 12 volts, doesn't mean the amps are there, which you need to start the vehicle,, take the battery and get it LOAD tested, this will let you know if one or more cells in the battery aren't up to par, if it doesn't measure up,, get it replaced, you sate that its only 4 months old, so take it to someone other than who you bought the battery from, and have it load tested there, once you have a known GOOD battery ,, start the vehicle,, then with a meter check the battery posts,, you should get a reading of between 13.5-14.5 volts, if you don't,, your alternator isn't doing its job and will need replacing

Could the armature on the starter be going bad or a few are shot an thats why it will start with no problem but atleast 65% of the time it wont start then we hav to jump it.

could be the alternator too, if the battery has no charge to start your car, has nothing to do with your starter motor, could be your altenator or battery. thanks.

Just replaced my drive belts and know my battery is not holding charge. I had the battery tested and re charge everything was good there, How could I check the alternator?

you need a voltage tester, the way one works is you plave the pins in the battery terminal positive to positive, neg. to neg. you then continue by moving the slector on the tool to the RPM/AMP position it should read atleast 14 amps

CAR KEEPS DIEING CHARGING LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON ALREADY REPLACED 2 ALTERNATORS.

There is a short in your Wire Harness. Dubble check the wires to your alternator, it's burning out the regulator. There should be 13.5 to 14.0 volts at your battery when the car is running. Good luck

Automatic locks are draining battery, 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sup

Pull fuse to locks and see if that solves the problem first, does the battery drain over night, could be a bad voltage regulator in alternator.
