Question about 1987 Nissan Pickup

1 Answer

Bogs and backfires--1988 Nissan Urvan E24-H w/Z24 eng.

Thanks for your info. Since we last mailed I have gapped the plugs, installed new points & condenser, set to .020 by feeler gage, replaced thermostat (unrelated to question) and replaced the fuel filter as well a dumped a can of fuel system cleaner in a full tank of petrol. The contents of the fuel filter looked really bad. Have not rounded up dwell meter or timing light yet but so far no improvement. What should the dwell be for this engine. The data plate shows timing to be 3 deg. BTDC. Idles fine but misbehaves under any kind of load--just normal street use. By your description it appears this engine has a timing belt.

The dwell angle should be 50 degrees (49-55) Your problem sounds like either the ignition system breaking down under load or a carburettor progression fault, i.e. the idle circuit is working fine but the main jets are blocked. This can sometimes be cleared by revving the engine with the air filter off & then covering the carb inlet with a piece of rag while keeping the throttle wide open, taking care not to let the rag get sucked in! The idea is to use the vacuum of the engine to **** fuel through the jets & hopefully clear them. Do this a couple of times without letting the engine cut out. Remove the rag just before the engine dies, pick up the revs & try again. Sorry I couldn't answer yesterday but there seemed to be a fault with the website.
Good luck & keep in touch.

Bogs and backfires

If your engine has a (reasonably) tall, blue rocker cover it'll be a chain driven camshaft. If you have a relatively flat, black rocker cover then you probably have the Z series engine which is belt driven. If the belt/chain has jumped a tooth the ignition timing will be a mile out. Be sure to disconnect the vacuum advance pipe when checking the ignition timing, especially with the Z series engine. If you have the blue rocker cover, that engine was prone to inlet manifold gasket failure & the spark plug colours should confirm/eliminate that. Gap the points to 20 thou/0.5mm. The white lead connects the points to the outside of the distributor & then on to the coil.

What have you done so far? Does your van have electronic ignition or points? If the latter i'd check/replace points, capacitor & white, low tension wire inside distributor. Also check the spark plugs (all four should have the same grey/brown colour) & H.T. lead resistance, especially if the fault occurs under load/acceleration.
