Take a piece of sandpaper, pull the cables off, and rub the terminals to bright and shiny. Then follow the cables to wherever they go, and make sure ground is tightened well onto the engine block/firewall/wherever, and the positive goes nicely to the starter and wherever else. Your battery might be slowly going down, but I doubt it.

The code P 1684 is showing in my car and it won't start. When you turn the key it sounds like it wants to start but won't catch.

P1684 means that the battery was disconnected within the last 50 starts. If you (or someone else) disconnected or in any way fiddled with the battery for any reason, the cables may not have been reconnected tightly...or the cables and/or battery terminals may need cleaning and the cable connections re-tightened. Out of curiosity, do you have electrical power e.g. lights, horn, accessories, etc.? If so, you may have the cables connected but not clean or properly tightened - connection is solid enough to provide power for other electrical requirements, but the heavy draw from the starter motor is more than the cable connections can handle. If cable connectors/battery terminals are corroded, cleaning with a wire brush (or even an old toothbrush with a paste of baking soda and water) may solve your problem. Make sure your battery connections are firm and tight.

1 week after routine service, 2007 4 cyl Honda Accord has since needed oxygen sensor and 2 days later engine would crank for 2 seconds and then just tick. Thought it was a weak battery so had it jumped...

I am thinking that a battery terminal was loose and the mechanic just tightened it up with out bothering to mention it. Ask as to what was actually done to put your mind at ease.

My car starts only when boosted

Measure the voltage across the car battery with a volt meter with the alternator running .. It needs to read 13.4 volts or higher to charge the battery.

1998 vw jetta tdi did not shut off

The air plate is not shutting off the air to the intake manifold or you are getting oil into the intake. Check the flap on the end of the intake where the black boot connects to it. You could have a vacuum leak or electronic issue not sur with out looking at it.

You said you tightened the battery cables, did you check the other end of the negative where it bolts to the engine. When you tightened the cables you also used a battery brush and cleaned the posts and ends?

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee makes a loud ticking noise, won't start.

Your problem is likely a bad battery and/or corrosion on the battery terminals. Remove the cables from the battery terminals and clean them with a wire brush or other tool. NOTE: always remove the negative cable first and reconnect it last. Reconnect the cables and then try to start/jump the vehicle again. If that doesn't clear the problem, take the battery to your local auto parts store or supplier and have them check it. You will probably need a new one.

Car won't start. Ticking noise under dash. Battery is ok. Happened once before and the next day it started.

had the same prob on my toyota. thought it was a bad starter. changed it twice. Turned out to be a slightly loose battery connection. I tightened it, and it hasn't happened since.

1998 Pontiac Grand Am

Get a new battery. The battery seems to be too drained of power. It will still light the dash but does not have enough power to turn the starter.Of course, before buying the battery, have it tested. Probably has a dead cell.

On the air conditioner, it seems you may have the condenser drain hose pulled out of the dash hole that leads to the outside and the water that condenses goes into the car instead of to the street. Of course, it also could be that the plastic housing is cracked and the water leaks out through that.
