First---Make sure your oil level is where it needs to be. If your car is driving fine and has no loss of power, then you probably have a defective knock sensor. It's hard to determine without more info on your vehicle, like mileage, compression, and oil pressure if your engine is "going bad"
as your car is a "p" reg i guess your in the UK.....its easy to pop along to your local ford dealer (service dept)and ask for print out of the fuse list from their computer.do it when they are having a queit time, say 1030 to 1130 and 1430 to 1600.most will accomodate.AND not charge.(i always send my wife, she is better looking,......sorry guys)
if you have the owners manual-look in the index for oil capacity, or fluid capacities. that should inform you of the oil type and capacity (if you change the filter as well, it will prob. take another half-quart or so. the manual should inform you. if no manual get on ford website, and search for escort 1.8L diesel van. precede with the year of model.it may inquire whether you have a/c, 4wd, etc. may need more oil, if so. good luck!
is it burning oil or losing oil, driving it without oil may have damaged it,and putting too much oil and driving it may have pop the crank seals, inspect engine, decide what to do,not agood sign for motor,
Check that the car starts and run smoothly. If the car is not driving it should be sold for spares or repair for a low price. Check mileage, engines over 120000 tend to have serious problems if not serviced regularly. Possible reasons for no oil, either oil had been emptied by someone, or there is a problem, if owner cannot give an explanation and the car has very low oil level there can be a leak or a problem with the engine. Check that gears and brakes are ok, and that there is no white smoke coming out from exhaust, white smoke means head gasket gone. check also that the engine is relatively clean, you do not want to buy a car that is leaking oil all over the engine. The MOT paper wrong model can be normal, often DVLA has wrong car data, check the car history and papers, and eventually phone DVLA to get details confirmed. In any case I wouldn't buy a car with no or very low oil level unless oil had been purposely emptied, in the best case this mean a leak, or that the oil had not been checked for ages. Good luck
