Question about 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix

1 Answer

I lost clamp on rubber boot on front axle next to hub. A lot of nasty oil drain out. I have repaired clamp. Does this boot get oil from diff or trans? Also, my cooling system is oily. I have flushed and it gets oily again. Could I have leak in trans. cooling lines in radiator and how could I test?

which lines on the radiator are the trans lines? Looks like on left next to cap, but don't know for sure.

Boot is self contained, mostlikly you have a bad trans cooler inside radiator.

you could hook a presure gauge to the trans. cooler and see if it holds presure.

there should be only two lines going into radiator. so i would say yes they are under the rad. cap.

How do I replace my inner axle on the passenger side of my 2002 Dodge Ram 4x4 4.7L. I lent my truck out and the C clip let go of the CV axle. The intermediate axle spline is stripped and I need to change...

Lift and support front end on suitable jack stands preferably on frame. Remove right front cv axle, stub shaft, and seal. You will need to pull the right front brake caliper assembly loose and place to the side. Then remove bolts from shock and upper control arm and hub nut to do this. Next, remove axle lock actuator on passenger side of front axle. Place a drain pan underneath front diff cover and remove cover and drain axle. In the center of differential there will be an 8 mm head bolt holding spider gear cross-shaft. Remove bolt and cross-shaft only! Push inner axle in until clip clears inside of passenger spider gear. Set clip aside and push/pull axle shaft straight out to passenger side.

Remove the wheel .remove axle nut. remove wheel hub. place drain pan under housing to catch oil. axle will pull out of housing .remove rubber boots remove wire clip and joint will come apart. you can obtain reconditioned shafts for a little more than the price of the two joints saves a lot of work

Ginding noise right front side?

the CV joint of the axle most likely at the hub end of axle.contained inside of a rubber boot full of grease.you cant see the actual joint but by graspping the axle and asserting force up/down,left/right you should be able to tell if the joint has "ruptured" or seperated. best fix is ALWAYS a new axle.repairing a boot or joint = $$parts,$$$$labor?
/new axle=$$parts,$labor plus most new after-market axles carry a lifetime warranty and its only a matter of time until the boots dry rot loose grease and go bad.next time only cost labor to switch axle.A "slipping" axle will give a loss of propellsion will actually prevent the transfer of driveline power from transmission to wheels.

Front end grinding

The end of the drive axle that goes into the diff is in splined into the side gear of the diff and will be dry as there would be no way to stop the oil coming out of the diff past the splines. The diff seal runs on the outside of the side gear and seals the oil in the diff. The drive axle slides in and out of the splined section to compensate for the changing lengths of the axle on turns. Grease on the splines would be a big help as it would allow the splines to move when under drive load.. Check the hub bearings for condition and adjustment and check the hub itself for wear indicators.

If you can see inside the wheel bearings then they require lubrication from the differential. If they are sealed then no. You don't say if the rear axles are 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton. No brand of seal will seal better than any other. Spray engine degreaser in the rear end and flush out with water. You may need to do that more than once.

will have to remove whole stub axle hub assembly to remove drive shaft from outer wheel stub axle (hub) assembly

The rubber cover on the left side axel is tore. I need to replace the joint I think. How do I do this?

You will need to remove the front wheel. Unbolt the caliper and move aside. Remove the rotor. Remove the axle nut. Unbolt the 3 hub/ bearing bolts and remove hub assembly. Pull the axle shaft out through the opening left by the hub bearing. Cut off the old boot and clamps. Hold axle shaft and tap joint and axle stub off of shaft with a hammer. Install new boot on shaft and reverse steps for assembly.

Replace front differential and front brakes

a general answer. i dont have the entire procedure in front of me. the best way to do this is to get a shop manual from an auto parts store. it'll explain steb by step, with pictures, the procedure for this repair. the front diff is mounted to the oil pan section of the engine. take off the driver's side axle nut while the truck is still on the ground. then you've got to pull the front tires off, disconnect the upper ball joints, unseat the right side axle out of the diff by hitting it away from the diff where it goes into the engine. then disconnect the left outer tie rod, and pull the left axle out of the truck. take out the front driveshaft from the transfer case to the diff, and drain the front diff. then unbolt it and struggle to get it out of the truck.
