Pre-ignition, caused by either by your ignition timing being out or you have got some duff fuel. Could be the vacuum advance diaphram/pipe has perished that connects to your distributor. First remove a few gallons of fuel from the tank and put in good quality fuel from a busy gas station. Drive for a while and see if pinging lessens. If not solved, there is a clamp on the distributor loosen this and rotate the distributor slightly in either direction, tighten clamp and drive. If worse move distributor in the other direction and try again. If still not solved unplug vacuum pipe ftom its connection on the engine and remove the distributor cap. **** the pipe, you should feel resistance in the pipe and see the plate below the distributor contacts set move.

There are a few thing thta would gas this, the most common is the o2 sensor, this controls the fuel mixture, on a 1988 its not to complex like the newer cars but makes a diffrence when it goes bad so i would replace that first, then you said a loss of power well, a bad egr valve will make it ping but you wouldnt loss power it would just ping, i would have the fuel preasure checked to make sure its putting out enough preasure, a weak fuelpump will cause loos of power and will cause a lean condition that in turn causes pinging. first start with an oxygen sensor then have the fuel preasure checked, and also have the egr valve tested. good luck.

Most likely the Idle Air Control Motor, but you could have other issues suck as a leaking fuel pressure regulator, bad EGR valve, or massive vacuum leak.

If the cap rotor and plug wires are original, I would look at them first.
Also check the condition of the plugs.

1988 crown vic fuel injector harness both contacts lite up

sounds like your PCM might be bad if it is not supplying correct voltage to fuel injector.

Also, the fuel injector itself may be bad or bad ground.

Does it have throttle body injection on that crown vic?

attached to the throttle body, looks like an electric motor bolted to a square piece with the corners notched out, with 2 wire connector on the end.

1988 Ford Crown Vic Strange Idle

When you turn the key on does the check engine light come on? If not it may be burned out. It sounds like a MAP sensor or an O2 sensor is bad. I would suggest taking it to autozone as they do free diagnostic and seeing if a code comes up. If it is a sensor it should, if not it may be the idle sensor not reading right in the ECU. More than likely it is one of the sensors though.
