Hi

it sounds like a poor earth connection, mostly this is either from the battery terminal or from the battery lead to the car body, the wire is either black or brown and should have a good connection metal to metal to and from the car body. please note just the black wire not the red one. there are 3 main earths on a car thats the biggest one the other goes to the gear box and the 3rd is in the boot normally.

if the earth is poor the the battery is over compensateing to start the car and keep it going hence it dies after so long, and will most likely still start the nest day after it has been left a while.

hope this helps
Regards
Dan

Hotrod, Recheck, clean and tighten all connections. If you say you had new alternator tested and is working OK, the new battery must be defective. With the van running, use a DVO meter and check the battery, if it shows above 14 volts then the alternator is OK, a good battery should show 12.4, that leaves either a faulty battery not holding a charge or you have a parasitic draw(something draining battery). Which would have to be diagnosed by a good Tech.
Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

New alternator and still not charging my 03 Sebring.also new battery. When checking with meter on battery while running only 12.4 v

That was a complete new alternator or a second hand replacement?

The usual non-charging fault with an alternator is when the diodes - the rectifier pack - at the back of the alternator burn out.

But, you say you have a new alternator?
That would suggest the fault lies elsewhere .. such as a power drain from the radio or instruments. To be honest, you would probably need an auto electrician to find such a fault.

However there is another possibility: Your battery is faulty. I appreciate that you may have had the battery checked and were told it was ok .. but .. but .. a faulty battery can still charge up at home and read 12 volts, but it isn't supplying the amps that are required to either start the car - or/and it will discharge quite quickly.

Is your car battery going flat after a few hours/overnight?
Will your car start with a boost?
Both are symptoms of a faulty battery.

If you can borrow -or swap with a friend - Put his battery on your car, and your battery in his car.
If your car starts ok and his car has troubles...

If you can get your car to a tyre/exhaust/battery shop they will be able to check your battery properly.

How do i fix a charging problem?

Hi Frank , what make vehicle do you have ? Most newer vehicles the charging system is computer controlled , from early 2000 ! An if there is a problem the PCM turns on battery light via serial data bus message to instrument cluster . All so some vehicles the BCM plays a roll in the charging system , could set a code there !

Briefly installed battery backwards. 2000 Ford Ranger. New Battery, new alternator, but alternator not charging battery. Truck starts on battery-new starter motor. Lights work, all electrical works

Is this the alternator that was in the vehicle when you hooked the battery up wrong? If so, you probably blew out the voltage regulator in the alternator.

I have a 2006 saturn ion-2 the battery keeps dying and wont stay charged. Whats going on with it?

If the battery is new, and you are sure it is ok, either the alternator is not charging the battery or there is something in the car that is using power when the key is off.
You could disconnect the battery at night to see if it stays charged, and-or have the alternator output checked.

First off, DON'T pull battery cable when running. That used to be the way to test charging systems years ago, not these days. Hopefully you didn't destroy your new alternator. IF, you have access to a volt meter, with car running put leads in each battery terminal you should have voltage at 13.1v - to 14.8v, Anything less, your alternator is bad. If it tests ok, then someone either missed a lead on back of alternator or one of wires is pinched.

Meaning of red battery light on dash

Hello Mdeon.

The red light is indicating that the alternator is not correctly charging or not charging at all.
Basic check would be to verify that the drive belt is actually turning the alternator. A loose belt can do this.
If the belt is OK, then check the connections at the alternator for looseness or corrosion.
Check the main terminal at the alternator for 12.5 volts ignition key off.
Make sure the mounting bolts for the alternator are clean and tight.
If all that checks out, replace the alternator, it is defective.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Check the function of the alternator. Charge the battery with a battery charger or jump start the engine. While the engine is running use a voltmeter to check the voltage at the battery posts. Red to + and black to -. You should have between 13.5 − 16 volts. If you do not the alternator is bad or the drive belt is loose. If the alternator checks ok then something is on that is drawing power from the battery and running it down. Check under hood, trunk, glove box, and interior lights. Can also be a brake light switch causing the brake lights to stay on. In rare cases it can also be a stuck relay such as a power window relay. From you description I think you will find the alternator is ok and your problem is something is on and running the battery down.
