Hi

172 is the lanbda sensor for the exhaust emmisions that is a simple unbolt and remove the wire plug job, easy to do. the second code 412 maf sensoror air mass sensor, this could be tricky because the first code 172 could cause this second code by the egine trying to compensate, also though alternatively the second code can cause the first by again compensating or forcing too much air to keep the idle high.

My betting is that the air sensor or maf sensor is at fault as this would cause the car to want more air and more fuel thus pushing emmisions high causing the emmisions code or lambda.

Also though it could be neither, if you have a split air pipe or a poor seal on any air intake pipe or from the air box say there was no air filter then that would again cause too much air + fuel. Have a good look at all your air pipes and vacuum pipes any of these with even pin holes in may cause the issue.

Lastly they are both cheap parts for a ford so after you check the pipes if there is no rips tears etc then change them both, the car wil run better and you will save fuel as well.

Hope this helps
Regards

Dan

How to fix service engine soon light on 1999 ford f-150 truck with 4.6 engine

First thing that needs to be done is to scan the trucks computer using a scan tool that you can rent for free from your local autoparts store. The trouble code and definition that is retrieved from the scanner will help to let you know what is going on with the truck and what repairs will be needed to fix your truck.

Here are the firing order diagrams for those engines and I hope that they will help you solve the problem that you are having. For some reason Ford has listed the same firing order for both engines starting in 1995.

Hesitates and misses at low speeds , check engine light comes on and when i put the code reading scanner on it i got a code 172, need to know ow to fix it

DTC 172 can be set by a variety of things from a bad Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor to a vacuum leak to a bad EGR system.

I would start with cleaning the MAF sensor.
