Question about 1991 Dodge Ram 350

1 Answer

I have a dodge ram van 250 1991. It seems like the reading onthe oil pressure guage on the dash has over time gotten so it is lower and lower, however, my spouse disagrees. It would be helpful to know what is an acceptable range for the needle. It doesnt have numbers on it, just little dashes. Pretending it is the face of a clock, it reads at between 4 and 4:30 when on the freeway. sometimes higher in town driving.

Hi Harvey

this sounds correct to me, oil pressure on nearly all gauges should sit around the middle so 4 or 4.30 would be correct. Does the car have any issues at all or are you just concerned? a reading to high suggestes a blockage in the oil or "black death" as it's known in the trade this is caused by cheap oil builing up and being carbonated within the engine. the other side is when the oil pressure is low meaning the oil pump is failing and therefore not pumping to the top of the engine.

If it was mine I would be happy to say thats a healthy engine reading.

Regards and a god new year to you.
Dan

If the oil pressure gauge is showing good oil pressure, I would check the switch for the warning light.

Oil pressure guage reading max

Remove the sending unit on the engine and check the oil press with a test gauge, if the oil pressure is good on the test gauge replace the oil press sending unit on the engine. Note the removal and installation of the sending unit requires a special socket, that is available at any auto parts store, you will likely need the deep version of that socket for a Chrysler product.

Generally you want the needle to be about in the middle, between the lines.

1989 dodge ram 150 4/w drive pickup has no oil pressure showing on the gage, driving or sitting still.

You need to have a oil pressure guage hooked up to see if you have a bad guage, sending unit to the guage, or if your oil pressure is actually low. Any garage should be able to do this, if you can't get one.

1996 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L with 93K. Oil dummy

I had the same problem and ended up changing the oil pump and it did not fix it. (Peace of mind anyway and it was cheap) I replaced the pressure sensor (that happens to be tucked in deep between the back of the engine and firewall) and the pressure gauge worked just fine after that.

I have a 1994 Dodge Ram B1500 Van. One of the dash lights is out. How do I change it?

If it's in a push button switch, you need to replace the switch. You can't replace the light in it. If it's behind the guage package, you can remove the two upper and two lower screws and pull out the guage package. You can get the peanut bulbs from the dealer or local parts place for a buck or two... You may need to remove the seedometer cable to pull out the guage package enought to get at the bulbs... A 4 out of 10 on the difficulty meter...

Have your mechanic check the oil pressure with a pressure guage. A oil pressure sensor is the most possible cause, but please make sure of proper oil pressure to avoid engine damage.
