Question about 2000 Subaru Outback

1 Answer

My wife took our 2000 subaru outback in for an oil change. I noticed the next day a huge hesitation at high RPMS(acc. on freeway and up hills) drives ok at slow town speeds. don't know if getting the oil changed had anything to do with it, my wife didn't notice anything but doesn't mean much. She said she noticed something but thought it was just cold. Already replaced the fuel filter, didn't notice much of a change. car makes a light hollow sound when acc.

Engine pulses/revs occasionally at stop lights

That's some mileage you've got on the car. It has obviously been well maintained?

Car engines do surge, Deb. Next time you stand next to a bus or truck just listen to the sound of the engine .. an occasional surge and change in the engine note.

It doesn't sound as if you have anything to worry about

Check the oil again. If the level is higher than it was after you changed it and/or is pasty again (kind of like milkshake) then you have coolant getting into it--most likely through a leaking or blown head gasket.

My wife has a 2000 diesel beetle. This last month

Well, a little oil in the intercooler is okay but a lot is not. Excessive oil in the intercooler usually means the seals in the turbo are leaking. VW diesel have a very bad problem with clogging the intake with carbon. If you remove the intake tube at the throttle body, hold open the "shut down" plate (the butterfly in the TB) and look with a light you will most likely see a huge restriction from goopy, black, carbon. The only way to clean it out well is to remove the intake and clean with carb cleaner, wire brushes and chisels. This could be the cause of overfull oil level (unburned fuel leaking down the cylinders due to lack of air flow from intake. I have seen and repaired lots of these and this sounds like your problem. Best of Luck
