I replaced my cat with a high flow cat and flowmaster 40 series exhaust about 4 years ago now. good set up on my 2.2L 4cyl 5spd. sounds excellent. the only problem, since it is a high flow cat and free flowing exhaust, there is little if any back pressure, and so i really dont have that much torque anymore. it actually made my truck slower on the bottom end. not that the 2.2L is a speed demon. lol. you could probably get away with a test pipe that is still the same size as the stock pipe and it will sound gread. as far as gas mileage, i doubt it will do anything to help. my exhaust didnt help my gas mileage any. the only thing ive noticed that got me more mileage is replacing the stock air filter with a drop in K&N filter. i got about 5 more miles a gallon just by doing that. good luck.

I have noticed when imtrying to speed up the car will putt and will flash the check engine light comes on I am not getting good gas mileage

If the check engine light is flashing , that means that a catalytic converter damaging event is happening . You have a misfire . It's time to take your vehicle to the repair shop before you wreck the catalytic converter . A new one can cost up $800.00 .
Best Answer: A flashing MIL, means there is a 'class A' misfire that is present. This type of misfire WILL ruin the catalytic converter(s), if the problem isn't fixed in a timely manner.

How do I get better gas mileage for my 2005 F-150? It now gets 11.5 mpg. In the past it averaged about 15 Any suggestions please

you could change the exhaust to a free flowing muffler. Should pay for itself after a a few tankfulls. Increasing the diameter of the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter by one size will be helpful. If you have a 1.25" diameter pipe going into converter and then going to 1.5" after the converter.

This is what is known as a cat back modification. Should be cheap to have done at an exhaust shop for an F150.

Will sound better and run a little different. DO not need to go to a big expensive or name brand system, it will not affect emissions and should improve mileage and power. The idea is that you are releasing the heat faster and not changing the emissions of the vehicle.

Putting in a free flowing muffler is no big deal and should be easy enough to get a name brand model. Just do not spend a lot of money for this trick.

How to replace the oxygen sensor

There are two sensors, one on the exhaust manifold the other on the catalytic converter. The exhaust manifold is the easy one to replace, the other the car needs to be on a lift.

Changing the O2 sensor will improve you gas mileage,

Hesitating

check O2 Sensors, add a product called Ametech restore at next oil change, this does wonders for your vehicle, improved my BHP & MPG threefold , also as you say it smells bad (Like rotten eggs?) this will be the catalytic converter, either replace or add a product called cataclean to the fuel & take it for a run, It literally cleans all the **** fro the catalytic converter removing that rotten egg smell

I have a 2006 honda pilot and was wondering if a high flow catalytic converter will boost my gas mileage enough to pay for it?

very much doubt it unless the cat fails for the inspection ,you would be better off buying a diesel variant with a manual gearbox for fuel economy

My check engine light is on & a diagnostic code check says it could be the catalytic converter (140,000 miles on vehicle), a vacuum leak, or O2 Sensor. What in your opion would be the most probable...

The catalytic converter being bad will definitely cause a drop in mileage and also a loss of power. Do you hear a rattling type sound when the vehicle is started cold or just when the ignition is shut off? Also if you bang on the converter with your hand, you may be able to hear the loose material rattle inside if it is bad. I think your Explorer has four catalytic converters also. What are the specific codes you received?

Installing new catlyic conforter is it hard? and would a old one reduce gas milage

Well, it all depends on what you think is "hard". Catalytic Coverters on Ford Explorers are no walk in the park - even for a seasoned technician.

Yes, an old converter that is clogged up can wreak havoc with your fuel mileage. However, if there is a problem with your converter that will affect fuel mileage, your Check Engine light will be yelling at you.

If your Check Engine light is not coming on, the best investment you can make for improving fuel mileage on a Ford Explorer is a tire pressure gauge.

Engine light stays on

Either replace the O2 sensors, or put a black piece of electrical tape over the check engine light.
