Mazda tribute revs to 4200 misfires

Is it misfiring or is the high rev limiter kicking in? Mazda's are not high rev engines even with the ford engine in it! mine idles at 750 +/- and hits 2500 at 75 MPH if I punch it it will go to 3g but not much higher.

Good luck

1999 ford ranger problems

A good idea to check the compression before anything else. Look for compression figures in the 100-160 psi range and evenly balanced. Lowest compression should be within 75% of the highest reading. Anything below 100 psi is a problem cylinder.

A fairly consistent tapping noise from the top of the engine between 50 - 70 mph. After 70-75 mph in seems to quiet down.

sounds like a lifter is bleeding out or starving for oil at low revs
check oil level and oil pressure
if thats good lifter or tappet clearance next to check
is engine seviced regularly?
slugde build up can cause problems also
if V6 petrol see a lot of worn valve guides causing noise worse when warm and noise comes in and out at 1200RPM
tappet clearance issue noise would be there all the time
lifter can also come and go while holding revs up

I have a 1999 v/w jetta tdi after engine warms Ihave a longer than normal crank time

You have a trait of a 99 TDI. It's been found to happen ONLY to late 99 TDI's, and it's a software glitch. If you want to spent the money (I did and HIGHLY recomment it) to chipping/reflashing the ECU it should go away
