If your starter engages but wont spin check to make sure the starter housing is making good contact on the bell housing or it wont ground out

Basic operation of a starter:
Your engine's starter motor is an electrical motor that is used to rotate the engine in order to get it to fire up. This motor draws a large amont of current from the battery (in the order of 70 Amps and up). In order to supply power to the starter a solenoid is used, it acts as a switch between the battery and the starter motor. This solenoid also engages the starter gear with the engine's flywheel and disengages it once the engine is started. Because the circuit for the solenoid also draws a heavy current a further relay is needed to control it.
The diagram below shows the electrical layout of the starting system.
  • i : Battery
  • ii : Starter relay(located in the relay box in the engine compartment)
  • iii : Starter solenoid
  • iv : Starter incorporating solenoid and motor.
  • v : Engine
  • vi : Battery earth cable
  • vii : Engine earth cable
  • viii : Ignition fuse
  • ix : Starter fuse
  • x : Solenoid to starter supply cable
  • xi : Ignition switch
  • xii : Starter motor
When the ignition(xi) is turned it supplies power from the battery through fuse (viii) to the starter relay(ii).
The starter relay activates and supplies power to the starter solenoid(iii) via fuse (ix)
The starter solenoid activates and connects power from the battery to the starter via a short cable(x) between the solenoid and starter motor. This allows the starter motor to turn.

General trouble shooting.
Turn the ignition off.
1/ First you need to check that the fuses are intact.
Keep the ignition off. Place the vehicle in Neutral. Chock the wheels and engage the parking brake.
2/ To prove the starter motor, connect power from the battery positive to the cable (x). This must be done with jumper cables. Touch the jumper cable to the connector on the back of the solenoid where cable (x) connects. Take care not to short circuit the jumper cable to the engine or vehicle body. It can be a tight fit and might not always be possible. If you hear the starter motor spin then it is working along with the engine earth cable. If not, connect the negative lead of the jumper cable between the battery and the starter motor body or any other bare piece of metal on the engine and put the positive lead on cable (x) again. If the starter motor does not spin it needs to come out for repair/replacement. If it spins check both the battery earth cable and engine earth cable and repair where nescasary.
3/ Once the starter motor has been proved move on to the solenoid. Remove the thin wire from the solenoid. Using a small piece of wire, connect battery positive to the connector where you just took off the wire. The solenoid should kick in and the starter motor will turn the engine. If the solenoid does not kick in, remove the starter for repair/replacement of the solenoid. If the solenoid kicks in then replace the starter relay.

If the starting circuit still does not operate the fault will be in the wiring. This needs reasonable expertise and if you dont have a voltmeter handy is not advised.
Bear in mind on automatic transmission vehicles there is an additional switch (Mode switch) wired in between the ignition switch and the starter relay. This switch is on the transmission itself and if faulty will not allow the starter to operate even if steps 1 to 3 were successfull. The same goes for the anti theft/immobiliser system.

  1. Connect the battery ammeter to the starter as shown in the illustration.

  1. Check the rotation of the starter, it must be smooth and steady with the pinion gear moving outwards. Compare the ammeter reading to the starter specifications chart.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figure 5
Replacing the starter while the engine is cold is recommended. A hot engine can result in personal injury.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the nut and disconnect the battery cable from the magnetic switch on the starter motor.
  3. Disconnect the remaining electrical connections at the starter.
  4. Remove the nuts and/or bolts securing the starter to the bell housing, then pull the starter toward the front of the vehicle to remove.

To install:
  1. Insert the starter into the bell housing being sure that the starter drive teeth are engaged with the flywheel teeth, not jammed against the flywheel.
  2. Tighten the attaching hardware to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and replace all electrical connections.

  1. Connect the positive battery cable (starter wire) to the starter.
  2. Connect the negative battery cable.

RELAY REPLACEMENT

See Figure 6
The starter relays on most of your Toyota trucks are located either in the relay block in the engine compartment or on the driver's side junction block. The cover for the relay compartments should be marked, "starter'' or the relay will have a part number with a suffix of 28300-XXXXX. Simply locate the relay, pull it out, and install a new one if needed.

Starter enable relay is under the hood in a fuse box that runs along the bottom of the windshield wipers, there are (2) twist knobs and (1) wing nut in the far left hand corner of the fuse box cover. remove cover. now you will see a group of smaller fuse box remove covers and look inside there will be I.D. to tell you which is which.

Looking at the end of the solenoid on top of the starter, the battery cable hooks to the larger stud on the top "12 o'clock". A smaller purple wire connects to the smaller terminal at 3 o'clock and the stud at 6 o'clock connects to the flat wire coming out of the starter. The purple wire comes from the neutral/park safety switch, which is fed by a yellow wire coming from the start relay which is fed by a yellow wire coming from the ignition. The start relay is also controlled by the Pass Key decoder module. Hope this helps, as for starters.
Check the fuel pump relay

The fuel pump relay is located to the right of the glove box.

Remove three 8mm screws (along the front edge) and a wingnut (drivers side near the accelerator) to loosen the insulation panel. Twist out the light courtesy light and using a pair of pliers squeeze the plastic nipple to remove the SIR. Remove the insulation panel from the vehicle.

After the insulation panel is removed, the fuse/relay panel will be to the right of the glove box. The insulation panel should have a diagram of the fuse/relay panel layout.

The relay should be in the left column of relays just above the fuses.

A Good contortionist with small hands and this can be done in about 15 mins.

2005 Sedona wont start, wont take a jump. Radio works and lights come on but wont turn over. Friend said to follow the positive battery cable to its end and id find the starter. cant find it. looked here...


OK, even if you find the starter, you'll have to find a way of testing it.

Starter Testing Starting System Voltage Drop Tests NOTE: The battery must be in good condition and fully charged prior to performing this test.
There are three area of the starter motor circuits that voltage drop test can be performed on. These include:
  • The starter feed circuit
  • The starter ground circuit
  • The starter solenoid.
Starter Feed Circuit
  1. Disable the fuel system by removing the fuel pump fuse or the fuel pump relay.
  2. Verify that the vehicle will not start.
  3. Connect the positive lead of a voltmeter to the positive terminal of the battery.
  4. Connect the negative lead of a voltmeter to the starter B+ terminal.
  5. Turn the ignition key to the START position and note the voltage displayed on the voltmeter.
    • Ideally, there should be no more than 0.1 volt drop for each connection displayed on the voltmeter. No voltage should be consumed by the vehicle wiring
      1. If the battery cable connects directly to the starter motor there should be no more than a 0.2 volt drop measured
      2. If the vehicle uses a starter solenoid between the battery and the starter motor terminal there should be no more than 0.4 volt displayed on the voltmeter
Starter Ground Circuit
  1. Disable the fuel system by removing the fuel pump fuse or the fuel pump relay.
  2. Verify that the vehicle will not start.
  3. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the case of the starter motor.
  4. Connect the negative lead of the voltmeter to the negative terminal of the battery.
  5. Turn the ignition key to the START position and note the voltage displayed on the voltmeter.
    • Ideally, there should be no more than 0.1 volt drop for each connection displayed on the voltmeter. No voltage should be consumed by the vehicle wiring
      1. If the battery cable connects directly to the starter motor there should be no more than a 0.2 volt drop measured
    • Starter Solenoid
  6. Disable the fuel system by removing the fuel pump fuse or the fuel pump relay.
  7. Verify that the vehicle will not start.
  8. Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the case starter B+ terminal.
  9. Connect the negative lead of the voltmeter to the lug (the starter M terminal) that connects the starter solenoid to the starter motor.
  10. Turn the ignition key to the START position and note the voltage displayed on the voltmeter.
    • Ideally, there should be no more than 0.2 volt drop across the starter solenoid displayed on the voltmeter.
In general, there should be no more than a 1.0 volt drop throughout the entire starter motor feed and ground circuit. Any voltage drops measured in either the feed or ground circuits after connections have been cleaned will require replacement of the affected battery cable. Typically, any voltage drops measured in the solenoid are repaired by replacing the starter motor.

NEED TO INSTALL SARTER ON 1997 EXPLORER ALL WHEEL DRIVE


  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise the front of the vehicle and install jackstands beneath the frame. Firmly apply the parking brake and place blocks in back of the rear wheels.



  1. Tag and disconnect the wiring at the starter.


WARNING When detaching the hardshell connector at the S-terminal, grasp the plastic shell to pull it off. Do not pull on the wire itself. Ensure to pull the connector straight off to prevent damage to the connector and S-terminal. If any part of the connector is damaged, replace the damaged component.


  1. Remove the starter mounting bolts and remove the starter.





To install:
  1. Position the starter motor against the engine and install the mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 15-19 ft. lbs. (21-27 Nm).
  2. Install the starter solenoid connector by pushing it straight on. Ensure that the connector locks in position with a notable click.

Install the starter cable nut to the starter solenoid B-terminal. Tighten the nut to 80-123 inch lbs. (9-14 Nm).
  1. Connect any remaining wiring to the starter motor.
  2. Lower the front of the vehicle and remove the wheel blocks.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.

RELAY REPLACEMENT

See Figures 7 through 13
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery.
  2. If necessary, remove the power distribution box cover.

  5. Connect the negative (-) cable to the battery.

I have a 2003 Dodge Caravan with a 3.3L it wont start or even turn over. Run test on electrical system found ignition signal to relay found power supply to the relay and ground to the relay. When I jumped...


Yes they do but I would rather think you have a bad battery cabe connection to the system, sometimes the battery cable corrudes and you can't see it try replacing the cable ends and the connector ends espically if they are by the battery.
