Change spark plugs

We are trying to change the spark plugs for 1, 3, 5. We were told to remove the intake manifold but still are unable to get to the spark plugs. It has 64,000 miles and the dealer insists that we have to take it to them because the spark plugs should last 100,000 miles. They started listing all of these other parts they would have to replace and I can't afford to take it to them. Of course I can't get a repair manual from the store. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Heres another potential way to get to the rear sparkplugs. You're probably not going to like this one.

    There is the possibility that you can unbolt the frame, Jack up the van and let back of the engine tilt toward the ground.

    My brother is a mechanic and mentioned this to me. I have not tried this yet, but if I do, I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi Sandy,
I did a search for 2004 Nissan Quest spark plug change and saw this link. It looks like you have to take it in to the dealer/shop or have a knowledgeable friend.

intake manifolds do require a gasket , but you shouldnt need to remove intake to change spark plugs...what kind of car is this ?

You are in luck you can fix both at the same time. Disconnect battery Pull off engine cover. Remove air cleaner housing and tube. Remove speed control and accelerator cables remove every bracket from the intake manifold. Remove the ten or so screws holding the intake on Remove dipstick tube bolt. Remove any wires and hoses. Lift it off and that is where the front 3 spark plugs are. Unbolt coils on top of each spark plug and 1/2 turn and pull off. Blow or vacuum everything from the spark plug tubes. Spray penetrating oil down by the plugs and let it soak. Turn the plug a 1/2 turn then turn it back down then out then in so the threads clean themselves remember they were in there for 100,000 miles. Make sure you replace them with platinum or iridium plugs

I was told that in order to change the spark plugs on my Nissan Maxima, the shop would have to remove the intake manifold to an extra cost of 200.00. Is it necessary to remove the intake manifold to change...


This is possibly true, especially if you have a 6 cylinder. They don't actually remove the whole intake from the motor, there is a section of the intake system that can be removed fairly easily and then the plugs can be accessed. Unfortunately, this design was more to push the price of a tune up higher than a needed design change, at least in my opinion. Since you have to remove that part most people are more inclined to take a vehicle to the dealer to replace spark plugs instead of doing it themselves and as you know, the dealership prices are higher than anywhere else and the mechanics have the same qualifications other mechanics have.Typically no seals need to be replaced when this is done but it does take more time and that is where the dealership makes it's money.

Where would the pvc value be on a 300 chrysler 2006? also where would the spark plugs be located?


Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PVC) Valve Removal & Installation 5.7L Engine To Remove:
    1.The PCV valve is mounted into the top/right side of the intake manifold.

    2.The PCV valve is sealed to the intake manifold with two O-rings.

    3.Free the PCV valve by rotating counter-clockwise 90 degrees until the locating tabs align with the openings on the manifold.

    4.Remove the PCV valve by pulling straight up from intake manifold and clearing the tabs.

    5.Check the condition of two valve O-rings.
To Install:
  1. Clean the PCV valve opening on the intake manifold.
  2. Inspect the PCV valve O-rings. Replace if suspect.
  3. Apply engine oil to the two O-rings.
  4. Place the PCV valve into intake manifold.
  5. Rotate the valve 90 degrees clockwise for installation.
6.1L Engine To Remove:
  1. The PCV valve is threaded into the right-front corner of the intake manifold.
  2. Remove the rubber hose from the PCV valve.
  3. Unscrew the PCV valve from the intake manifold.
To Install:
  1. Clean the PCV valve opening on the intake manifold.
  2. Check the condition of the PCV valve O-ring. Replace if suspect.
  3. Check the condition of the PCV valve threads and clean if necessary.
  4. Apply engine oil to the O-ring.
  5. Install the PCV valve into intake manifold.
  6. Install the rubber hose to the PCV valve.

The spark plugs should lead to the coil pack via a spark plug wire but may be hidden by a plastic cover.

The following details the ignition coil changing on the Chrysler 300:

2.7L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the intake manifold.
  3. Use compressed air to clear the area around the ignition coil and spark plug.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
  5. Remove the two fasteners securing the ignition coil.
  6. Remove the ignition coil.
To Install:
  1. Install the ignition coil.
  2. Tighten the fasteners to 55 in-lb (6.2 Nm).
  3. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition coil.
  4. Install the intake manifold.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
3.5L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the intake manifold.
  3. Use compressed air to clear the area around the ignition coil and spark plug.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil. NOTE: Loosen the ignition coil fasteners by alternating back and forth. Do not lose the spacers under the coil when loosening the fasteners.
  5. Remove the two fasteners securing the ignition coil.
  6. Remove the ignition coil.
To Install:
NOTE: Tighten the ignition coil fasteners by alternating back and forth. Do not lose the spacers under the coil when installing the coil.
  1. Install the ignition coil.
  2. Tighten the fasteners to 60 in-lb (6.7 Nm).
  3. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition coil.
  4. Install the intake manifold.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
5.7L Engine (2005) To Remove:
NOTE: Carefully note the position of each spark plug cable before disconnecting them so they can be installed in their original positions to prevent misfire.
NOTE: The throttle body intake air duct or intake air box may need to be removed to gain access to certain ignition coils.
  1. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
  2. Remove the secondary ignition cable from the coil.
  3. Use compressed air to clear the area around the ignition coil.
  4. Remove the two fasteners securing the ignition coil. Bolts are retained to coil.
  5. Remove the ignition coil. Pull with a slight twisting motion to help release the boot seal with the spark plugs.
To Install:
NOTE: Apply a light film of dielectric grease to the inside of the coil boots before installation.
  1. Clean area around spark plug and coil mounting area with compressed air.
  2. Install the ignition coil.
  3. Tighten the fasteners to 105 in-lb (12 Nm).
  4. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition coil.
  5. Connect the secondary ignition cable to the coil.
  6. Install the air duct or air box if removed.

NOTE: Each ignition coil, mounted on the valve cover, fires two spark plugs at each cylinder.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Use compressed air to clear the area around the ignition coil and spark plug.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ignition coil.
  4. Remove the two fasteners securing the ignition coil.
  5. Remove the ignition coil. Pull with a slight twisting motion to help release the boot seal with the spark plugs.

Spark plug location in a 2001 ford escape


Need to remove upper intake manifold to reach valve cover close to firewall.
1) The location of spark plugs 456 are under the plastic shield in front of the engine. It takes an 8mm socket to remove the three bolts holding the shield once the shield is removed you will see a coil for each spark plug. Use the 8mm socket and remove the coil and rubber boots. You will now see the spark plug (note there are not any spark plug wires).
2) The location of spark plugs 123 are located to the rear of the eng. You have to remove the air intake manifold in order to get to the spark plus. Remove the throttle wire then remove the other items on top of the intake manifold.

I keep getting a notice that the #2 and #4 cyclinder is misfiring. I went to change the plugs, but could not locate them from the top of the engine. Where are the plugs located at?


Need to remove upper intake manifold to reach valve cover close to firewall. 1) The location of spark plugs 456 are under the plastic shield in front of the engine. It takes an 8mm socket to remove the three bolts holding the shield once the shield is removed you will see a coil for each spark plug. Use the 8mm socket and remove the coil and rubber boots. You will now see the spark plug (note there are not any spark plug wires). 2) The location of spark plugs 123 are located to the rear of the eng. You have to remove the air intake manifold in order to get to the spark plus. Remove the throttle wire then remove the other items on top of the intake manifold. 3) Loosen all the bolts holding the manfold. 8mm socket-- I think three in front and three in the middle. Remove the EGR valve mounts so you can slide the manifold out. Disconnet all vacuum lines from manifold and the air filter inlet closet to manifold. Just take a general look and ensure you have all wiring and tubing disconnected then slide the manifold off the eng and EGR valve. NOW MAKE SURE you cover all intake holes (leading into the engine) with paper towels to prevent droping screws etc into the engine. Then follow step 1 above

Changing spark plugs - need to remove intake manifold and should change gaskets...which ones?


To change a spark plug. 1.Disconnect the wire attached to the spark plug it would be wise to do only one at a time! 2.Take a long socket that will fit the spark plug 3.Attach to the socket wrench and turn counter clockwise until off. 4. Put the new spark plug in and hand screw until tight then turn the socket wrench clockwise until completely tight usually 1 1/2 turns. 5.Then reconnect the spark plug wire. Easy as that. Repeat steps 3-5 for the rest and remember ONE PLUG WIRE AT A TIME!
