Today, after driving five minutes to get bagels, my car would not restart. When I turn the key, all I hear is one click. So far it has happened three times today, but if I turn the key off and on a few times it will start. I think it is either the starter relay in fuse box under hood or general solonoid on starter itself. I can not get the darn relay out of the fuse box under hood. It is the one labeled ST right. Even after I push back the lever it will not pull out. How do you get the relay out and do you think the starter is gone?
Coming from a Toyota tech, it sounds like the starter contacts are worn and time for a starter rebuild. parts are only available from toyota and and not expensive, and labour should be 1.5 hours.

The relay is probably bolted in, and will have to be removed by unbolting it after removal of the fuse box. It could be the relay, although I doubt it. More likely other components beginning to fail such as the starter switch, the neutral safety switch, the contacts in the starter solenoid, or the battery itself.

I'm having same problem. Also, starter tries to turn over ... even after I take the key out of the ignition!!!! How do I disengage the starter? What could be causing this?
Same exact problem...one click. After a few tries, it starts. I don't want my wife to get stranded someplace.
Thanks.
When i key the ignition, i hear only 1 click and hear the fuel pump going. Battery seems good enough to start, all the electrical on the dash is good and bright. A mechanic friend said it might be a sensor not seeing the 4-speed automatic trans. in park...so i key it on, put into neutral...then it starts very good. It worked for about 2 weeks, now, it will not start even in neutral. What is this sensor, and how much does it cost? The Starter and Solenoid seems to be working well. I have a 1998 4Runner, 4 speed automatic, SR5, 3.4L V6, 4WD
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM
I have the same problem. What puzzles me is why the starter might continue to run on after the key is turned off. Mine has did exactly this the other night.
Wouldn't that be the starter relay failing to disengage? (de-energize?)
What might be a total estimate for a starter replacement at a shop that is not a cheap one?
where is the starter locaited, aqn what size are the bolts holding it in
