They are often obscured by the buildup of oily deposits and dirt.
A Haynes or Chilton aftermarket service manual would help you locate them.
Once you do find them, correction fluid ('whiteout') with its vivid white is great for making them more visible.
Make sure you get them right and turn the engine by slowly hand to verify the belt's proper location since many engines are 'interference' types and if the valve timing is off, you may destroy a few things if the valves hit the pistons.

Hi John:
If you take the timing blt cover off so you can see the face of the pump drive, one of the lugs should have a dot on it. (That is if it's similar to ones I've worked on. There should also be a dot on the drive pulley. If you hold a straight edge across the centres of these pulleys, and manually turn the engine, there should be a point where the dots on both pulleys line up throughth centre line of the pulleys. This is the position where you can remove the old belt and install the new one. As long as the end result is the same alignment as you started with, all will be cool.

Camry timing belt

I am assuming you are referring to a 2.2 liter 5SFE engine. If so camshaft timing mark is dot located on forward face of sprocket mid spoke/or a notch on inboard rim of sprocket. locate mark and paint with white paint. Locate timing mark-small raised dot on plate behind sprocket at approx. one o-clock position paint this white for easy reference. Crank shaft sprocket has small notch on inboard rim. paint white for reference. align cam timing marks, then align crankshaft mark with #0 on timing scale. Adjust tensioner and belt is aligned. I recommend changing idler pulleys and water pump when replacing belt as preventative maintenance. Also inspect shaft oil seals and replace as needed. Performing these services now will save time and money in the future.

Installing a timing belt on a 2000 toyota rav4 need to know how to location of the set timing, located the top center on cam but where else do I find the other

Okay, first you need to purchase a repair manual. Especially since you're doing the timing.
So once you have determined TDC (top dead center) #1 cylinder, and you have put your timing chain on (and lined up the dots); crank pully dot up, cam pully dot bottom. They should be facing eachother, and will be in the center of the engine (looking at the front of it). Once you are convinced and sure that these are directly lined up with one another, you can put it back together - also make sure that you did not remove the distributor, and that if you did you inserted it and adjusted the timing (as mentioned above) appropriately.
I still advise purchasing a repair manual, preferrably CHILTON; but Haynes will suffice for this as well.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.

How to put back the timing belt

line up the lines on the belt with the dots on the sprockets and you cant miss.there is also two small dimples on the cover behind the cam sprockets that you can use to line up dots on face of cam sprockets with.the belt should have marks to indicate which side faces outward toward front of vehicle.turn crankshaft until dot on its sprocket is in roughly the five oclock position.align solid line on belt with this dot(area of belt with words on it will need to be between cam sprockets.i find it helpful to wedge a piece of cardboard between belt and lip on oil pump to hold belt in position on crank align the next solid line with the tooth on the DRIVERS cam sprocket that has the dot on it.....this shoul be roughly two oclock position.lastly align the hashed line on belt withdot on passenger side cam sprocket....this will be in roughly the 11 oclock position.loop remainder of belt behind tensioner pulleyand set long as themarks on the belt line up with marks on sprockets properly you cant miss.

I change my water pump now my timing is off

You didnt get the pulley/sprockets lined up when you replaced the pump. There are dots located on the pulleys that line up with dots machined into the case. See pictures below.

How to you install a water pumpon a 3.5 97 dodge

Remove the hood bracket bar, 4bolts, then the fan shroud assembly, then the belts, belt adjuster, and timing covers, line up the cam gears, crank gear to the marks , cam has 1 dot, they line up to timing housing 2 dots, (single dot to middle of the 2 dots), crank has 1 dot to mark on the oil pump housing to your right of crank gear, thats TDC. now remove the timing belt tensioner, 2 bolts, and remove the belt, if the pump has leaked, replace the belt, and tensioner if it is NOT metal Pulley, the fibre one will break down from the antifreeze. its a good idea to replace the water pump housing orings behind it, ac bracket has to come off, as the right cam on engine, this not a retiming iussue with the gear. GOOD LUCK. RDJRP

We have a dodge stratus 2006 4 cylinder, timing chain has been replace, it started and now it turns and won't start, help

The timnig could be out of time. The system could have skipped . When replacing the timing chain you should turn the engine over by hand with out starting two or three times to make sure the marks stay lined up. The timing chain tensioner could be weak.

Good Luck

Timing belt broken

this engine doesn't use a timnig belt it uses a chain, the valves will not touch the pistons in any event.
