Please state the following ? what is the significance of a 57 plate ? now a plate in relation to a motor vehicle refers to the builders data plate mounted somewhere under the engine compartment ,i think it does anyway -now if everything isnt working like you state then pull all the fuses one by one and test with a multimeter and do not rely on the owners manual to tell you what they are then go from their and test for a feed and a good ground on the supply wires to each unit in turn
If you didn't install the backing plate over the pressure plate fingers then there will be nothing to engage the clutch and nothing to return the pushrod back to default position. The same will happen if you forgot the pushrod. It will also happen when you do not install the throw out bearing although it might lightly depress the pressure plate. Also check if you have adjusted the clutch cable tension correctly or if it's hooked up to the actuator lever.
First how much play is in the pedal before is gets tight? If there is more the 1/2" are clutch is not releasing from the pressure plate and flywheel. If it is good the trouble maybe the pressure plate. The springs can become bad and one side will not let the pressure plate and flywheel to disengage. The later is may bet what is the problem and why they sold the car. Hope it helps
