I have an 1981 4x4 chev with a 305engine who ever had it before me has taken alot of stuff apart for no aparent reason (lol great eh) i am not sure exactly how the two lines from the automatic transmission are to be routed to the rad and tranny cooler

The two lines from the transmission is the cooler lines,one is the inlet and the other the outlet.
If the rad and cooler stand vertically then the out line from the transmisson must connected to the top so that the transmission fluid can be cooled and returned to the transmission.

If it's an automatic, it is a combination switch located on the passenger side of the transmission, on the opposite end of the rod the linkage attaches to on the driver side. The switch is expensive but often can be taken apart and cleaned, but you need to be careful when taking it apart because it's easy to have the stuff inside fall out. Instructions for r&r are in both chilton or haynes manuals. If you want to replace the switch try a scrapyard one first as a new one is around $200.00. Make sure the bulb sockets have a good ground before replacing the switch. The ground wires rot off perhaps more frequently than the switches fail.
automatic transmission has a lots of parts in it.you have to have a lot of special percission tools .it would be cheaper to trade old unit for rebuilt one .if you buy tools you have to buy over thirty tools to fix transmission.you have to but transmission jack engine support fixture .bushing drivers and remover.seals protector tool for input clutch seal.spring compressor for forward clutch direct clutch.you have to buy final drive tool.its more tools .but if you want to learn to rebuilt your transmission.go to salvage yard buy old scrap one with all parts to it. buy the dvd and manual.on line. take transmission apart on work bench at home you would be surprise what you can learn.you can do a full over haul or half over haul . just go in transmission replace the part you need.you can buy clutches band seals friction plates bushing kit for $260.00.you can buy forward - direct -reverse - drums- one way clutches .pumps.on line look up transmission parts. .
The transfer case shows to use Automatic Transmission Fluid. I would personally use a full synthetic transmission fluid as well. I showed three transfer case options for that vehicle and depending on which one you have it will hold anywhere from 1.5 quarts to just a little over 2 quarts depending on which one you have.
Check the 10 wire connector going into the transmission for water or corrosion. This could cause inadvertant shifting but would also probably set the check engine light. The throttle position sensor could also cause this. Speed sensors screw into the transmission from the outside and would cause a limp in condition where it wouldn't shift out of second gear.
