Question about 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT

2000 grand am gt with poor idle

My idle is bouncing between 0 and 1000, no matter what, even if the car is cold or hot, i have to keep giving it gas when im at a traffic light to keep it from dying. Does anyone know what this problem is? I also bought gas for the first time since i bought the car and thats when it started doing it. Does it sound like something with the fuel filter or one of the fuel injectors? someone help!!!

I dont have a problem starting the car, it just doesnt stay idle and i have to keep my foot on the pedal to keep it going, without giving it gas it just bounces between 0 and 1000. I have a haynes book and had a few of my friends that work at shops saying that it probably has something to do with the EVAP. It all started when i put fuel in it for the first time last week since i bought it, it was on E and i filled it up after working on the car, doing a coolant flush, air filter, upper and lower intake gasket replacements. Im not sure if we put everything back together right because now the service engine light is on after we worked on it. Anymore info?

Wow! You've done a lot on it. Do you think you could have gotten bad gas? You can try adding a fuel additive to boost your octane or some other magical mystery additive from your local parts store. You can sometimes ask the guys n gals in there and they have good advice too.

It definately is fuel related. Do you have trouble starting the car? Does it take several times to get it going? I'm thinking fuel pump or clogged fuel filter. To be exactly sure you must get some info that will help you troubleshoot it. I purchased a Haynes Repair Manual for $20 at an Auto Zone for a GMC Safari that I had and it showed me how to do many things: replace an EGR valve, replace the fuel pump, replace fuel filters and many other things. It helped keep that car running to 195,000 miles. Great investment for anything with a used car.

Car does not start good when it is hot.i have to give it gas or it will stall.

Check the Idle Air Control and crank sensor. See if either one is going bad. Try cleaning the MAF with MAF cleaner or replace it if it's bad. It's usually a process of elimination with cleaning the IAC, MAF or even seafoaming the intake. I do these things first because its cheap. Crank sensors can be effected by temperature and the MAF and IAC will too so too. See what cleaning them will do first.

Not picking up gas when engine is cold, sputtering, bogging out especially when travelling uphill, Is this some sort of a sensor maybe??,the spark plugs are new. thanks

check fuel filter. it is starving for fuel. unless the fuel pump is bad. check filter first, then go from there. symtoms of a bad coolant sensor--poor cold idle, stalling, rich mixture retarded timing, slow idle speed, cold hesitation or stumble, poor fuel milage.

2000 jeep cherokee sport 4.0 dies want idle

This has happened all of a sudden?
It is sounding like it is starving for fuel...

First we will check for bad fuel. A GOOD Gasline Antifreeze can get the impurities and water out of the Gas. Get a bottle and pour the whole thing in the gas tank, bounce the car around to mix it with the fuel. Start it and let it run for a little while so see if it smooths out. If does not help then look at replacing the fuel filter as it may be clogged.
