Are you replacing the timing chain? The circle marks on the timing gears are to be lined up vertically while both are positioned towards each other. Do this with engine at top dead center on #1 cylinder if I remember right. Been a while but I can check if you still need to time this.

If the distributor has been pulled, it needs to be reinstalled as to fire on #1 TDC, To drop this distributor,
1) bring #1 piston to Top Dead Center (TDC) with the timing mark on the Harmonic balancer on the zero (or V groove),
2) Next the dist. will have a indentation (little dimple) at the very bottom of the shaft, while out of the motor, align that dimple with the white line on the oil pump flange (the ring that nestles on the oil pump) the white line should be vertical.
3) Now when you drop the dist. down to align with the cam, the rotor should rotate to a number stamped on the dist. base. Such as a # 8 for V8 or #6 for V6. This should now be setting correctly to fire on #1 while TDC. You'll have to be close on meshing the cam tooth because the distributor can really only fit against the back of the intake housing perpendicular.
4) Once you have this done slightly tighten the hold down clamp. The chances of it being dead on for timing are slim, so the timing will have to be adjusted with a programmable tech II scanner. Timing is not adjustable for this motor manually.
*Contrary to most people statements, There is no tan wire with a white tracer behind the glove box on this year (96-2000) This was discontinued after 1995, The only thing you accomplish by rotating the dist. is throwing the injectors out of wack because they are read by the CPS (Crank positioning sensor in reference to the Cam (Cam positioning Sensor) .Hope this helps.

Diagram for serpitime belt for 1996 chevy caviler

if you haven`t removed the belt take and draw the belt routing with the pulleys on the proper side of the belt as it runs around them, usually there is a belt diagram under the hood on the upper rad support but with the age of the car it may be missing,or you can get the belt routing from the parts store were you get the belt,if not then the library should have car books that have your car and engine set up in them to help you.

1996, 2.2 chevy cavalier, I keep getting different answers. Does it have a timing chain, or timing belt? If it has a timing chain, does that need to be changed?

the 2.2 is a timing chain. If the cover on the front of the engine is metal it is almost always a timing chain. If it is plastic is always a timing belt.

Got audi a4 1996 diesel need to change cambelt but

A diesel uses a different procedure. You'll need a tool to hold the camshaft pulley parallel to the top of the cylinder head. The timing mark to set TDC for piston #1 is located on top of bell housing. The pointer must be aligned on the diamond cut on the flywheel. A VW/Audi setting bar tool #2065A is needed to lock the camshaft in position. Lock the injection pumpin position using the special lock pin (VW/Audi special tool no. 2064). Caution: If the drive belt is broken or has jumped time, do not attempt to lock the sprocket at this time!!! You will also need VW/Audi special tool no. VW210 to measure belt tension between camshaft sproket and injection pump sprocket. So good luck.

1996 Chevy Cavalier

your car does not have a timing belt it has a chain. but yes if the pump is driven by timing belt and it starts leaking the coolant gets on belt and it will fail. if your car has the 2.4 engine the water pump runs off of the timing chain and depending on mileage it would be smart to go ahead and replace it since it will be tore down anyway will save on labor
