When starting, a squealing noise starts, then stops. I checked my belts. They seemed tight enough. Now the battery light comes on, as it isn't charging. Where are the tensioners for the belts located ? Belts too loose or alternator? Thanks

The noise is a belt. Check your belt for nicks and tearing, from slippage. To tighten the alternator, there will be several bolts holding the alt. in place. Loosen the bolts, Now you can move the alt.. It helps to have a pry bar to hold it in place while you tighten the bolts back up. Also sometimes, there is a bolt on the backside of the alt.. Check your tension before you start, you want it with about a 1/4 inch play. The socket is either a 13 or 14 mm.

WHAT IS THE LIKELY CAUSED OF A LOUD SQUEALING NOISE COMING FROM THE ALTERNATOR SERPENTINE DRIVE BELT SYSTEM ? IS IT THE ALTERNATOR OR SERPENTINE BELT?

serpentine belt is getting old and hard and the cold weather was causing it to slip
check belt condition ( small cracks across the grooves = scrap and get a new one) and check tension

Serpentine belt squealing

Either the belt has stretched, or the tensioner is not keeping it tight.
Or it has oil on it.

My 1999 ford explorer makes a squealing noise when I start it up until I push on gas or proceed to move...it will also occassionally make this squealing noise as I am driving..any Idea what this could

The squealing noise you describe is usually from a slipping belt. The belt tensioner may be faulty and not keeping the belt tight enough, the alternator is charging and putting a load on the belt when you first start the engine. If the belt squeaked constantly I would say the belt is glazed.

Toyota Tercel belts are squealing

I have been having the same problem with the alternator belt squealing, most noticeably, when using the heater fan , accelerating, turning the headlights on. I have a 1997 Toyota Tercel CE 1.5L 4cyl with no A/C. I just tightened the belt tight enough that there is no give to the belt and it does not squeal anymore.

I also used a Goodyear Gatorback from Napa belt which seems to be nice and quiet when tight enough.

Just replaced belt and alternator. Engine squeals very loud when started. What should I check next? belt tension seems good.

Sounds like the new alternator was run without first fully charging the battery (12.3 - 12.8 volts)
This will destroy an alternator every time -- the classic symptom is a squealing belt.

Start up problem

If the belts are making noise, the alternator may NOT be spinning fast enough to produce sufficient voltage to charge ther battery, because the belts are slipping, and slipping = noises.
Tighten the belts.

Regarding the starter: Replace it, or get it overhauled at a starter repair service. You have bad starter contacts
