Question about 2000 Ford Windstar

Steering system I am in the process of intalling a rack and pinion. I removed the broken one, hooked up the new one, bleed the system and started the car to let it run for two min...per the intructions. however as soon as i touched the steering wheel to turn it the steering wheel rapidly moves left to right on it's own. Why is it doning that?

The hose on the rack not at the right place double check that if there ok and it wasnt doing that before the valve in the rack defect doing that i seen that it was the pressure line not the right place or broken inside the hose good luck HOPE IT FIXYA OUR POST PIERRE

How do you replace the rack and opinion on a 92 cutlass ceira


Here you are - power rack & pinion.

Except 2.2L and 1993-96 3.1L Engines
See Figure 1
  1. Raise the intermediate shaft seal and remove intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
  2. Remove the air cleaner and disconnect the pressure hoses from the steering gear.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands, then remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
  4. Remove the cotter pins and nuts from both tie rod ends. Using tool J-6627 or BT-7101, press the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  5. If equipped with an Air Management pipe, remove the bracket bolt from the crossmember.
  6. Remove the 2 rear cradle mounting bolts and lower the rear of the cradle about 4-5 in. (102-127mm).

WARNING
If the rear of the cradle is lowered too far, the engine components nearest the cowl may be damaged.
  1. If equipped, remove the rack and pinion heat shield.

  1. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts, then the gear assembly through the left wheel opening.
To install:
  1. Install the gear assembly through the left wheel opening and install the mounting bolts.
  2. Install the heat shield.
  3. Raise the rear of the cradle and install the mounting bolts.
  4. Install the bracket bolt to the crossmember under the air management pipe.
  5. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles, install the retaining nuts and insert new cotter pins.
  6. Install the front wheels and lower the vehicle.
  7. Install the high pressure hoses to the steering gear and install the air cleaner.
  8. Install the intermediate shaft seal and the intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
2.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Install an engine support fixture J-28467-A, or the equivalent.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  5. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  6. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from stub shaft.

CAUTION
Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.
  1. Remove the exhaust pipe hanger bracket near rear of frame including the brake line retainer and rubber exhaust pipe hangers.
  2. Remove the engine and transaxle mount nuts at the subframe.
  3. Support the rear of the subframe with jack stands.
  4. Remove the rear subframe bolts and discard.
  5. Lower the subframe for access to rack and pinion.
Do not lower the rear of the cradle too far, as damage to engine components nearest the cowl may result.
  1. Remove the cotter pins and castle nuts from the outer tie rod ends and separate the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles using a suitable puller.
  2. Disconnect the power steering lines from the steering gear.
  3. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts and nuts.
  4. Remove the rack and pinion through left wheel opening.
To Install:
  1. Install the rack and pinion through left wheel opening.
  2. Install the rack and pinion mounting bolts and nuts and tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
  3. Connect the power steering lines to the rack using new O-rings and tighten the fittings to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm) on the return line and 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) on the pressure line.
  4. Install the power steering line clip to steering gear.
  5. Connect the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Tighten the castle nuts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm). Install new cotter pins.
  6. Raise the subframe into position and install new frame mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm).
  7. Remove the jack.
  8. Install the engine mount and transaxle mount nuts and tighten to 39 ft. lbs. (53 Nm).
  9. Install the exhaust pipe hanger bracket near the rear of frame including brake line retainer and rubber exhaust pipe hanger.
  10. Connect the intermediate shaft to the stub shaft and tighten the pinch bolt to 29 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Remove the support fixture.
  14. Connect the negative battery cable.
  15. Refill the power steering reservoir and bleed the system.
  16. Check the front end alignment and adjust as necessary.
3.1L Engine (VIN M)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove engine torque strut from engine.
  3. Install an engine support fixture J-28467-A, or the equivalent.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  6. Remove the cotter pins and castle nuts from the outer tie rod ends and separate the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles using a suitable puller.
  7. Remove the center engine and rear transaxle mounts from the frame.
  8. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  9. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from stub shaft.

How to replace rack an pinion cutlass ciera 1992


You aren't saying what engine is in it, or whether it is manual or power steering. Here is the R/R procedure for power steering rack for all engine sizes.

Except 2.2L and 1993-96 3.1L Engines
See Figure 1
  1. Raise the intermediate shaft seal and remove intermediate shaft-to-stub shaft pinch bolt.
  2. Remove the air cleaner and disconnect the pressure hoses from the steering gear.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands, then remove both front wheel and tire assemblies.
  4. Remove the cotter pins and nuts from both tie rod ends. Using tool J-6627 or BT-7101, press the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle.
  5. If equipped with an Air Management pipe, remove the bracket bolt from the crossmember.
  6. Remove the 2 rear cradle mounting bolts and lower the rear of the cradle about 4-5 in. (102-127mm).

WARNING
If the rear of the cradle is lowered too far, the engine components nearest the cowl may be damaged.

Whining noise from power steering pump, have ftted new pump noise still there


It is possible that your PS fluid is the wrong type or has broken down. There are differences in the composition, not all PS fluids are alike. Chrysler, for instance uses something different than Ford and the pumps will whine and fail if the wrong fluid is used. This may be true with Mercedes.

Check with Mercedes for specs for your requirements. It is possible that the rack and pinion which moves the front wheels has issues and is either leaking internally or is binding. Binding requires the pump to work harder. The output of your new pump can be pressure tested as well as the rack and pinion.

A transmission shop would have hydraulic testing gauges or Mercedes will. It may be cheaper to try and bleed the old fluid out of the system, front wheel off the ground. Then disconnect line to rack and pinion and work rack side to side to bleed fluid. Then install new fluid and see if it helped.

Change the racket pion


To change the rack and pinion on your Monte Carlo you must first jack, or lift the car up off the ground, and remove the front wheels and tires.remove any plastic shrouds that block you from the bottom of the car.then you will need a Tie rod separator they make different types.You remove the tie rods from the front spindles.Trying not to damage the rubber on the tie rod ends that is what holds the grease inside for lubrication.then, if you look at the power steering hoses. these should come directly from the pump.loosen both the pressure, and the return hoses and remove from the rack. you will need a fairly large oil drain pan to catch any leaks that may happen. If you look where the steering shaft comes from the passenger compartment down to the rack. it must be removed from the rack, Note; center the steering wheel before removal of the new rack.Then the rack should have some mounting fasteners holding it to the chassis. when you replace this part,The new rack does not come with the tie rod ends that you had removed earlier from the outer ends of this part at the wheels. the old ones will need to be removed from the old rack and reinstalled back on the new rack.NOTE; to get these tie rod ends fairly close back to the same location,after you break them loose, you count the number of turns to remove these from the old rack. this has to be done to be able to get the front wheels back in close alignment and remember this count. because you replace these on the new rack and the count that you had coming off is the number of turns to put these back on the new rack. and tighten these down good.This rack may have to come out the sideways, or it may have to be got out by removing something that may be blocking removal. just look real close and see if there is a clear area it can come out.When you Install this new rack and pinion you mount the rack and install the hoses refill your power steering pump with fresh fluid. and check for any leaks. and before you install the hoses replace the o rings if there is any to make sure you have a good seal at your connections. then hook up your steering shaft to the new rack and check to see if you are still in alignment( steering wheel)after you hook up the tie rod ends and the new rack is mounted securely. double check your fluid level in the pump.you should get all the air out of the system, by cranking the engine and turn the steering wheel right and left all the way to the lock. ( or the stop) until you dont hear anymore noise from the system. it may take driving a little while before the noise is gone completely . Keep checking your pump fluid level while you are bleeding the air out of the system. and also keep your eyes on the areas where the hoses that you removed and replaced for any leaks that may be a problem.also when you install any fluid lines,always start them with care. make sure not to cross thread these lines. start them with your fingers first. then you should have the car alignment checked at a alignment shop, or a tire store. this is to make sure you have no alignment issues. and for a few days keep your fluid level checked.

HOW DO I REPLACE THE HIGH PRESSURE LINE FOR A POWER STEERING UNIT ON A 1998 MUSTANG?


Disconnect battery ground cable.
Remove engine Air Cleaner (ACL) .
Disconnect electrical connector in back of engine cooling fan motor.
Remove radiator fan shroud.
Disconnect constant control relay module harness from headlamp harness and place constant control relay module on top of engine to provide accessibility to power steering lines.
Remove wiring harness guide retaining screws and position guide aside.
Remove screw at power steering hose bracket.
Remove anti-rattle clip.
Remove plastic strap retaining tubes to power rack and pinion steering gear.
Remove power steering pressure hose at power steering pump.
Remove power steering pressure hose at power rack and pinion steering gear.
Remove power steering pressure hose from vehicle.
Reverse procedure to install new hose.
Fill and bleed power steering system.

How do you install a rack n pinion on a 1999 grand am


I suggest a manual from your local auto parts store, but I can give you the basics.

You will need the car raised for clearance underneath as you will be removing the following: Tie rod ends, power steering hoses to the rack itself, the rack mounting bolts & your wheels on both sides to provide clearance. The steering column also has to be disconnected from the rack unit, from underneath the car. (sometimes you need to loosen the shaft inside the drivers compartment to allow the mating part to slide & be removed. You should be able to take the rack out through the wheel well.

You'll nee to swap parts from the old rack to the new rack that are being reused, be sure to measure your distance from tip to tip of your rack unit and use that measurement to assemble the parts and eliminate the need for front end alignment once completed.

Reinstall all of your parts and secure properly. keep the front end raised and supported & you will need to bleed the rack unit.

To do this, fill the P.S. system, not overfull, then start the vehicle and slowly turn the wheel from the far left turn to a far right turn about 3 or 4 times. Stop & check fluid each time. Do not hold the steering wheel to the far right or left as that increases the pressure on the system to an unsafe level and doesn't help the vehicle or the process of bleeding the brakes.

You should be ready to go, check & refill the fluid in the PS system.

1999 grand am gt power steering presure hose


if you replacing only lines for power steering you dont have to take out the belt but on other side of linens are very hard to disconnect from the rack and pinion...
you have to lift and secure the front disconnect the lines from pump and fallow he lines and keep disconect the holders from the body when you rich the end you are right under the driver seat you will see the very little open space and you see the bolt that connects linen to rack and pinion you will need long wrench take it out..just take your time ..when placing the new line just make sure it seats good on place and you gonna need the bleed power steering system after changing the lines...
so finally this job is really hard to do if you don't have experience i recommended to you just bring somebody know what he's doing for save time and not to do some job double time.Power steering system is closed system air or heavy leaks can damage your expensive power steering pump and rack and pinion.

Replacing rack and pinion - 95 bonneville


remove battery at least 15 mins or more before starting work. mark steering rod to st/rack and remove bolt. remove two subframe bolts at rear and lower the frame thus creating space to work. remove st/ rod. lock steering from turning. very important as not have airbag problems. remove tierod ends from knuckls. remove hoses from rack and mounting bolts . remove rack assembley from drivers side. you should replace as a long rack ie. rack with new inner tie rods already fitted. reverse order for fitting. pay attention as not catch rod bellows thus tearing them. use new seals on hoses. make sure to flush system of any debri. use new p/s fluid and after starting car turn steering from end to end to bleed system off air . time appox. 3.5 to 5.0 hrs.good luck
