I think the ball joint is pressed into the lower control arm so you replace the whole shooting match. Doing the other side at the same time would be a good idea.

SOURCE: front upper ball joint replacement

The dealer's answer (if you are interested).......

The ball joint is pressed into the upper control arm and has a tapered stud for attachment to the steering knuckle. The ball joint stud is attached and locked into the steering knuckle using a special nut. The ball joint is a sealed-for-life type and requires no maintenance. If the ball joint is defective it will require replacement of the entire upper control arm.

Sorry.

Not hard, you'll need a special socket to get the axle nut off and getting the bearing out of the spindle is usually a real chore. Since it sounds like the spindle is already out, you might be able to do it in a press.

To get the ball joints out of the spindle, drive them out with a hammer. If you need to get the ball joint out of the axle, strike the axle next to where the ball joint taper is with a large hammer. That will usually distort the axle material enough (for a split second) to let the tappered section loose.

How can you tell if my ball joints are going out

While driving down the road, if when you hit a bump, and your car's front end seems to shake or your steering wheel shakes from the bump; that is a good sign to have your ball joints looked at.

What are some of the symptoms that you are experiencing?

I have a Chevvy 1973 ss, the front right lower ball joint broke. This is attached to the lower swing arm which I am battling to get off. Please help.

I used to use a drill and drill out the center of the ball joint stud. Start
with a small drill and work up in size carefully. If you drill straight in about an inch
then the taper will release and just about fall out. Much easier than hammering
and cursing. Hope this helps.

The car, no matter what speed, will **** real hard right to left like something in the front end suspension is broke

couple possibilites.

Contol arm ball joint
tie rod ball joint
(really low air pressure in tire (unlikely))

pretty well all the options... ball joints are "fun" to relace... usually involves a big hammer! :-)

The front hub assembly is loose behind wheel nit sure if it could be broke at hub or the axle all together still drives fine no pull or shake

Hi, this could be caused by worn ball joints or worn wheel bearings. If the whole hub moves look at the ball joints to determine the play on the joints, if the wheel moves and there are no movement on the ball joints, then you need to replace the wheel bearings.

Remove just the front hub?

You're not going to hurt anything. To separate the ball joints you smack the raised spots (nipples) on the actual knuckle/spindle (the big part you're removing that has the bearing) itself near each joint. Just don't hammer up on the ball joint bolts or accidentally hit the rubber ball joint boots with your hammer. You hit it hard and with good aim. Check frequently to see if it has broke loose while you're striking it.

The part you're taking to get the bearing pressed into has to be separated from all of the following: the upper control arm, lower control arm, brake caliper (don't disconnect brake line from caliper, let it rest on something and not hang), ABS sensor wire (if equipped) the axle, outer tie rod end (steering).

If you can't pull out all those little cotter keys you can take a tiny drill bit and drill the holes back out to make room for the new ones.
