Hi Allie,

If you take your vehicle to a local garage - They can do it for you for ALOT LESS THAN the DEALERS!!

In most cases when the stereo is pulled out it already has the CODE WRITTEN on top of it. If your in the uk - you should pay NO MORE than 10-15 pounds!!

Get it sorted lass cos u cant be shakin that sexy Booty if ya aint got the tunes :)

P.S The title is misleading lol

Good luck x

Security light is in 1999 Oldsmobile Alero but car seems to be running OK

The security, antitheft or lock picture/icon is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. This link explains it pretty well.

2000 oldsmobile alero is shutting off imediatly after starting

The security system may be your problem. Look for a light on the dash that says SECURITY or ANTITHEFT when the vehicle won't start. This light is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. It will normally allow the vehicle to run for 1-5 secomds and then shut off the fuel injectors. This link explains it pretty well.

no there is no lock position for the alero. if the key wont turn the key and or ignition cylinder may be worn out. try jiggling the key as you try to turn it. you may need to replace the ignition switch to repair this. when you do it will need to be programed to the vehicle. hope this helps

I have a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero. It will start but won't stay running. What could be the problem?

There are many things that can cause that symptom. The most common is the AntiTheft System locking out the fuel control due to a problem with the PassKey sensor in the Ignition Tumbler. If this is the case, your "SECURITY" light will be flashing when you turn the Ignition Switch to the "Run" position. It could also be a problem with the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPS) Oldsmobile had a big problem with these modules failing to communicate with the Engine Control Module (ECM). This results in the ECM locking out the injectors in the "Run" position. You will get start-stall-start-stall....

Old trick, hijack your own car by shortening the contact.
Whole steering column? Only the switch or wire harness problem.
Would you put her vin neutral before trying please.

If you can't hotwire, get somebody who knows. Plenty of them around.
