I had this problem on my 04 tdi beetle.  Turned out to be a bad security lock on my key!  Dealer also wanted to change fuel filter and various expensive stuff but I declined.  All it took was a new key.

Same problem. Not sure what you're saying - how do I completely disable the security system?

If you do not have a Check engine light on and you have an alarm system, try in disabling that first and then try starting it. Do not disable the alarm by pushing the button, you must completely disable it. Some systems will act this way mhen the key did not register

My 03 vw beetle died while i was driving it

Let me know when you said died it died completely even after the repairs you did the engine is not cranking or it does? have you checked whether any relays are overloaded and blown? Probably the main engine relay is blown. Also check if the starter motor is burnt too,or any earth wire is not well connected ( tight on the chassis with the engine block)
