Rear Brake shoe replacement can be a difficult task at times. Most mechanics replace one sie at a time so that they can look at the other side for reference if needed. You can find step by step brake shoe repalcement here: http://www.freeautomechanic.com/brake-drum-brakes.html

You can also get a diagram in the repair manual link at the bottom of that page.

Loud brake noise in 97 buick lesabre

When you had the drums off, did you inspect the shoes for excessive wear? And How do the drums look? Are they grooved? Can you be more specific about the loud noise. Does it sound like a grinding noise, or a screeching or pulsating noise. Is it lower pitch or high pitch?

My buick makes a cluncking noise when I aply the brakes .my brakes work fine and the noise comes from the back of the car .

If you have rear drum brakes, a brake shoe may have separated from the metal brake shoe lining and is "tilting" in and out, making the noise when you apply the brakes. It is very important to remove the drum and inspect the brakes because if this is what happened the wheel could
"lock" unexpectedly and cause you to lose control of the vehicle.

It is best to assemble the shoes and springs and only then fit first the one shoeto the backing plate and then the other. Don't forget to fit the handbrake cable before assembly
