When i drive i always keep an eye on my engine RPM and lately i notice that the truck used to shift into 5th gear @ about 70-70 km/hour and the RPM goes to about 1500 RPM . and @ 2500 RPM when i am on 120 KM/HR. but this morning it was at 3000 RPM and the truck was only at about 110 KM/hr. and then on my way back home the truck worked normal like 5th gear@ 70 k and 2500 RPM @ 120 KM/HR. i don't know what's going on and i can feel the truck is kind of heavy . also i havent changed the transmission fluid and the truck has about 85000 KM. 2005 chevy equinox

What is the o/d button on top of automatic gear stick for please

Over Drive..... Generally speaking, overdrive (OD) is the highest gear in the transmission. Overdrive allows the engine to operate at a lower rpm for a given road speed. This allows the vehicle to achieve better fuel efficiency, and often quieter operation on the highway. When it is switched on, an automatic transmission can shift into overdrive mode after a certain speed is reached (usually 70+ km/h [43+ mph] depending on the load). When it is off, the automatic transmission shifting is limited to the lower gears. For an automatic transmission, it is almost always best to select overdrive and allow the transmission to control engagement of the overdrive. (It may be necessary to switch it off if the vehicle is being operated in a mountainous area or when towing a trailer.) With a manual transmission, overdrive should usually be selected when the average speed is above 70 km/h (approx. 43 mph).

I just wanted to know the optimal shifting points to do 70mph comfortably. Should the car be at 2500-3000 rpm in 5th gear at 60-65 mph? I typically shift at or around 3k rpm in every gear, and the car...

How many gears does your car have? One of my cars has to do a little over 3000rpm to maintain 70-75 in 5th gear. My other car has to do about 3000rpm to maintain 65-70 in 5th gear.

It all depends on the number of gears your car has and the gearing ratio. The second car I have is geared more optimally for city driving and gets better fuel economy going slower than fast highway speeds.

Having driven several rental cars too I would say anywhere between 2500 to 3000 is reasonable for the average car. If you are driving a vehicle like say a porsche, bmw or audi they may have more gears and may be at a lower rpm at 70mph than your car.

Over-revving in 5th at 75mph all of a sudden

If the car rev'd up but did not speed up at the same time the clutch is starting to slip. Check the adjustment and recheck driving. When the clutch starts to wear this is how they act, only most people ignore whats happening and keep driving till adjustments won't fix it and the clutch has to be replaced. Have adjustment checked and keep an eye on it and hopefullty you won't need a clutch yet.

Stick shift # Automatic RPM

That is normal,If you do the same speed in 4th gear the rpm's will almost double.

The rpm's will repond faster in a manual than an automatic.

In a manual the engine supplies the power required directly to the gear that you have selected thus the engine rpm's will increase or decrease as needed.

4000 rpm at 70 miles per hour

You should have another gear "5th" at 70mph your tacho should read about 2500 rpm.
Make sure you don't need to depress something or push the gear stick against a spring to select 5th.
Is there a gear layout on top of the gearstick knob, do you have 5th gear on there?
The highest gear ratio is a little over 1 to 1 so at 70 mph you would expect 3500 rpm, but, it is a little over 1 to 1 so it will be closer to 2500rpm.
