I cannot get my 4wd to engage in my 1999 Ram 3500 dually. How do I know if this is an actuator problem or if it is a vaccuum problem?

Use a hand held vacuum pump and see if it engages. Sometimes the shift fork gets bent in the axle and this will cause it to not engage or it could be a bad vacuum motor.

Had the same problem and had a rusted out line that goes from the the bottom of the transfer case support to the vacuum pot on the front axle. Easy fix. Here is some other info I found on my truck.
Grey line is the vacuum feed and goes from firewall to transfer case vacuum switch (TCVS)(which is on top of the transfer case). Green is vented to atmosphere from the (TCVS) with a filter on the end. Red and black (or blue?) come off TCVS to the front axle disconnect vacuum pot. Grey line always has vacuum and is ported via the TCVS to the red line when the 4x4 handle is selected to 4x4. It is all mechanical. The electrical switch on the axle vacuum pot only activates the "4X4" light on the cab when the axle is connected.

I just repair the same problem on a 99 dodge ram 2500 and found the black vacuum line was broke in the black cover that protect the red and the black vacuum lines at the axle after repair work perfect.

The service 4x4 light comes on when I engage 4x4 on a 2003 Dodge Ram 3500 Dually 5.9 T D 4 DOOR

Put it in 4x4 mode and get someone to read your OBDii Codes to see what code is popping.. Sounds like a simple 4x4 switch BUT with the service engine light on an OBD reader would be a Great way to find the problem..

I put 2014 rims on my 2010. Tire pressure issues. screen on the dash is showing psi's blank. how do I reset? I assume these 2014 rims would have stock sensors in them, and there basically brand new.

Some Chrysler ,Jeep and Dodge vehicles have ttye pressure sensors calibrated to the vevicle,so therefore if you change the
tyres to a different type you will need to take your vehicle to a C.J.D.
service department to have the computer of your car re-programmed to accept the new tyres

I have a 1999 dodge 1/2 ton 4x4 when I pull it into 4wd the front end does not engage and the indicator light doesn't come on

first you should look on the front differential right on top towards the passenger side is a actuator un plug it and make sure you have power and ground if you do replace the actuator this is a pretty commen problem with these good luck

1995 dodge 3500 4wd wont engage have shifter on floor light wont come on or 4wd wont engage

Any time your dealing with a 4x4 system the best start is at you front axle. Its primarily a vacuum leak so check to see if the 2 vac lines are hooked up (its good to check the electric connections.). When your 4 wheel drive is engaged and the motors running you should have vacuum at one or both of thee lines depending on if your in 4 hi or low .
If no vacuum at axle check the Vacum switchs(the plug with 4 vac lines) on top of the transfer case it will have 2 feed lines(grey & green) they conect in to the into the vacum harness on back of motor (passanger side). A vacum schematic is normally located on the raditor core support (right under the hood next to hood release)
Hope this helps

1999 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel. 4wd won't work

yes there is a diaphram and it may need to be changed and I hope when you blew the lines out that you put them back where they belong . The problem with the diaphram and the vaccuum lines is that they are extremely sensitive to moisture and therefore not very efficient. I know that you can get an aftermarket kit to switch it to a mecanical system which I guarantee will be the end of your problem. I would also take the filler plug out to see the fluid level, if nothing comes out fill it with the proper fluid till it comes out of the hole then quickly put the plug back in.

2004 chevy 3500 dually 4X4 front axle not working and no light showing 4X4

On the full size, the front actuator is electric, not vacuum.

When in 4wd mode, a switch on top of the transfer case conducts 12 volts out to the actuator. Wire #50 (brown) is the 12v feed, and it conducts to the light blue wire (#900) to the actuator.
When shifted out of 4wd, the switch opens up and no voltage goes to the actuator.

Check voltage at the connector for the front actuator (at the front differential - it looks like a large bullet that threads into the front diff.) If it has 12 volts, the actuator is the problem. If it does not have 12 volts, check the transfer case switch and the power feed to the transfer case.

I'll assume it is the actuator, if the plug to the actuator is getting 12 volts when in 4wd.
The way this actuator works, is it is a sealed chamber that gets heated by voltage. When it heats, the pin in the end swells and pushes a shift fork in the front differential. The shift fork engages a spline on the passenger side of the differential, and boom! you have 4WD.

GM offered an upgrade to this actuator that is a motor instead of a heated device. However, it requires a small harness addition, a spacer, and a new actuator. It is about a $150 to $200 option.

If I were you, I would buy a new heated actuator. They are available at most auto parts stores, and are about $90. They are also on eBay for about $55 plus shipping. These are very easy to change - just thread out the old one, and thread in a new one.

Good luck, That actuator is usually the problem 90% of time.
