Hi, you may have a plugged up converter. When a converter plugs up, the exhaust has no where to go but stay in the engine. This will cause the engine to get hot in a short period of time. Do a pressure test on your cooling system. If it holds pressure, this would be a good thing, if not, this means the water is going somewhere. It still could be a sign of a leaking head or intake gasket. I'm willing to bet you may have a leaking intake gasket and your water is entering the head and going out the exhaust causing your tailpipe issue and the water has loosened the carbon in the exhaust system plugging the converter. The engine will loose all kinds of power with a plugged exhaust. If that checks out, check out you MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor. This tells the computer how much air is entering the engine in which the computer tells the injectors how much fuel to give the engine.

A little more, if the computer starts leaning the engine out due to getting wrong information from the MAF, this will cause the engine to get very hot as well. Hope this information helps you.

When I put the gas petal to the floor first before cranking then cranks up smoke it coming out tail pipe and smelling gas

Hi there,

The starting technique you're referring to is not used on late model vehicles because of the fuel injection systems used. If you have a carburetor, when you press the accelerator pedal down, you're adding a lot (more than needed) of fuel mix to the engine. When it does fire up, what you're smelling is unburned fuel. Vehicle fuel is too rich at that point.

Why will my 1988 Chevy will not accelerate past 25?

i would start by checker your cat converter is not clogged. There are 3 way to do this you can have someone start the truck and rev it while you check the exhaust coming out of the tail pipe it should be a petty good flow coming out of the tail pipe, if no flow is coming from the pipe then yourcat conveters are clogged. The second way is to remove the o2 sensors in front of the cat converter and try driving it to see if it was accelerate, if you can accelerate then you know it's your converter if not then i would look athe the distributor and or timing.

1999 blazer only starts when primed and then wont start after sitting

Black smoke is usually extra fuel, but you say you are priming it to start so that could be why.
Have you checked fuel pump pressure before and after cranking ?

Heater not working

If you have a very clean tail pipe the water is going through the engine. This happens when the head gasket starts leaking from the water jacket into the cylinder and then is pushed out thru the tail pipe via the exhaust of the engine cylinder.

Here is a quick way to check for a blown / leaking head gasket. First start of the day remove the radiator cap and fill the radiator all the way to the ring area. Leave the cap off and start the vehicle. If it pushes lots of water out of the cap hole as you accelerate the engine then the head gasket is leaking into the water jacket of the engine.

You can possibly locate the cylinder that is causing the problem by removing the spark plugs one at a time. When you come across the very clean spark plug in comparison to all of the rest that is the cylinder that is leaking.

The only real fix for this is removal and replacement of the head gasket.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Check your catalytic converter, good chance that it has broken apart and is blocking exhaust flow. Common Chevy 4.3L Issue.

Have you check fuel pressure at idle should be 29-30psi. Leave guage on and start it and press the gas peddle it should jump to 40psi if not then the fuel pump is weak or is going to fail. Does the Blazer have high mile? if so its probably the fuel pump.
