Question about 2003 BMW 330

Transmission sign has shown on the desh board

Transmission sing has come all of the sudden, checked manual- its telling me that transmission is in emergency defalt.
Any answer?

I had a similar prob lem like this and there was codes for the shift selector switch i replaced that and a couple months later it came on again i then had to replace the trans control unit and that fixed the problem

Transmission


No, there's not a pump, but it does have a torque converter. It basically converts engine power to drive the transmission.
Hard shifting and having to warm up before working properly are both tell-tale signs of low transmission fluid. Make sure your vehicle is level and it's warmed up to normal operating temperature before you check it. Check it while it's running.
If your fluid level is okay, then I would consider changing the transmission fluid and filter. You'll have to drain the transmission fluid before changing the filter anyway. Just make certain you use the correct type of transmission fluid. You can look it up under "Capacities and Specifications", in your manual or online. Transmission filters are inexpensive if you want to do it yourself.

n automatic transmission depends on the transmission fluid for transferring engine power to the wheels, shifting gears, lubricating moving parts and cooling down the transmission. Check the transmission fluid when your car is serviced and change it as recommended. Different cars have different ways of checking the transmission fluid level; some require the engine to be shut off (e.g. Honda), some cars don't have a transmission dipstick at all and the fluid can only be checked in a repair shop. Check your owner's manual for proper procedure. This is how the transmission fluid checked on most cars: transmission-fluid1.jpg After the vehicle was driven for a while to let the transmission fluid warm up, place your vehicle on a level ground. Set the parking brake. Make sure the transmission is in "P" (Park) position. Leave the engine running. Find the automatic transmission dipstick (your owner's manual will tell you where it is located). Pull the dipstick out.

A transmission fluid expands when warmed up, so if the car has been driven for a while (20-30 minutes), the transmission level should be between "HOT" marks. Normally the automatic transmission fluid should be clean and transparent, as in these photos.

Noisy transmission /drivetrain makes a loud whinning noise in 3rd gear and up


Your car is getting up in age. If the transmission has not been serviced often or even normal wear and tear can cause transmissions this old to start showing signs of wear. Depending on if its an auto or manual transmission, a standard transmission whine in one gear is usually a sign of pending break down. Check fluid for burning and over heating. Change it, if it has not been changed in past 20-30K miles. Check the magnet on the drain bolt of transmission. This also can tell you the condition of things to come. Good Luck.

Difficult to change gear when car warmed up


Dear Phil,

If It Is An Automatic. Have The Transmission Fluid Checked. If It Is A Manual Transmission. Have You Gear Fluid Checked. Have Them Check The Master Cylinder Pump As Well. You Might Have To Flush The Transmission Fluid, Replacing The Fluid With Fresh Fluid.

I have a 2000 Saturn LS2 ALL OF A SUDDEN THE WHOLE IS SHAKING ESPECIALLY WHEN I STOP AT LIGHTS OR STOP SIGNS...WHERE DO WE CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID WE CHECK EVERYTHING ELSE


doesn't sound like transmission fluid in my experience if transmission fluid is low your gears will slip or not work at all, sound to me your spark plugs or bad gas or something in that order.

What kind of transmission fluid? The auto parts store tells me ATF+4, my Chilton's Manual tells me Dexron II. I don't believe either really knows what they're talking about...


You should know that using ANY Dexron/Mercon fluid is not recomended, and has shown to lead to transmission failure.

MOPAR ATF +3 is the factory fluid. But, MOPAR has made a new fluid called ATF +4. Chrysler has posted a TSB saying that ATF +4 should be used now.

All modern vehicles have a computer or the ECM (Electronic Control Module) that controls the operation of the vehicle powertrain (the engine and transmission). The main purpose of this is to keep the engine running at top efficiency with the lowest possible emissions. With constantly growing demands for better fuel economy and new strictest emission regulations it's not very easy to achieve. The engine parameters need to be constantly and precisely adjusted according to various conditions such as speed, load, engine temperature, gasoline quality, ambient air temperature, road conditions, etc. That's why today's cars have much more electronics than in early days - there is a large number of various sensors and other electronic devices that help the vehicle computer or ECM to precisely control the engine and transmission operation and monitor emissions.
The vehicle computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and your car needs to be looked at. ecm.jpgThe engine computer or ECM To properly diagnose what is wrong, you need to take your car to a mechanic or a dealer. The technician at the dealership or a garage will then hook up the scanner to the car computer and retrieve the stored trouble code(s). Then he (she) will look it up in the service manual provided by a car manufacturer. The service manual contains the list of possible codes (about few hundreds) and describes what each code means and what needs to be tested. The code itself doesn't tell exactly what component is defective - it only indicates where to look, what engine parameter is out of normal range. The technician will have to perform further testing to pinpoint a defective part.

What does it mean when an automatic transmission slips gears?


hello. Here are some of the transmission slipping signs you should be looking for:
  • A delay of more than a second in shifting from the neutral to drive or reverse gear, could mean that there is a problem with the transmission. If on changing from a neutral or park position to the drive or reverse gear, the car does not immediately catch the gear and move forward or backward, then it could mean a problem in the transmission.
  • If you change gears, and you hear a sudden clunk or sudden jolt or shudder, then the shifting is not smooth and there could be a problem with the gearbox.
  • If the engine rpm keeps increasing but there is no increase in the speed, then it could be a sign of the transmission slipping.
  • Another one of the transmission slipping signs is oil or automatic transmission fluid (ATF) leakage. This could damage the transmission.
  • If your car has suddenly started sounding noisy, then it could also be because of a problem in the gearbox.
  • Most automatic transmission systems, nowadays, have a check engine light or an OD light, which flashes if there is a problem with the engine. You will need a code reader to diagnose the problem by reading the code.
