Nissan Maxima car repair ripoff

Took 1995 above model in last week to have it repaired for the engine shaking whenever car was started. Shaking would go away after 3 minutes and not shake rest of day unless it was parked for over 1 hour.

Repair shop fixed the shaking, but charged me $897 for replacing rack & pinion. I told them I never had power steering problems at all, and they should of called me before starting repair. Oh, new garage says there was a leaking gasket by the steering column that was spraying rich fuel with a hissing noise and old garage fixed that plus 2 belts they had broken.

New garage thinks all I had was a gasket that was leaking and had no pressure when starting.

Help, I'm going to report the old garage to Better Business.

    Here's the reply from manager from auto repair shop. They said they noticed leak from steering column under car at shop (I never had any leaks in my garage). Auto shop said power steering fluid was leaking. The reason for the noise on engine starting was that the noise wa coming from the power steering pump. The reason for the noise was "air" in the power steering hydraulic system. After a few minutes of the pump working, it would circulate the air out of the system an the noise would be gone again.

    Has anyone ever heard of this problem and then having to pay for a new rack & pinoin system. I'm baffled and feeling ripped off. Help please.

    thank u very much. I'd like to hear more replys, as this firm is ripping off women and doesn't even follow the Auto Repair Act of 1998 of Illinois to give an estimate or call before repairing. I know a few young women that have been taken already, but don't have time to follow up (exactly what this auto repair shop is looking for-women that don't know cars). Thanks.

I'm wondering if your injectors are leaking. If they are, and the car sits for a period of time like you're saying, fuel would puddle up and the car would run extremely rich until the excess puddled fuel burned off. Did you (or do you) notice black smoke from the tailpipe during the time the car is running really rough? Take a look and see - rev the engine if you need to, and see if you see some. It'd take a few minutes to burn off, and once it did, as long as the rest of the car is working right, you'd run normally. If you shut the car off for a short time (ie, getting gas, renting a movie) the car likely wouldn't sit long enough for enough fuel to puddle up for the condition to recur. If you park it overnight, that's plenty of time for the injectors to leak enough fuel for the car to run rough on startup.

No guarantee of course, but that's what sounds like a worthwhile investigation to me.

    If there's air in the system, the easiest way to get rid of it is to jack up the front of the car (get both front wheels off the ground), take off the cap for the power steering reservoir, and turn the wheel fully back and forth, lock to lock, several times. This puts the pump to work, moving the fluid through the system, and moving any air in the system through as well. When it passes by the high-pressure hose inlet, the air bubbles rise up to the reservoir and burp out of there through the open hole exposed by removing the cap. There's no need to replace the rack. Further, your pump isn't doing anything more than idling along with the motor and circulating fluid until you turn the wheels - then its work comes in to assist you in turning the wheels. Sitting still and idling on a cold start, it's not doing any real work. Sorry but that explanation that they gave you doesn't make sense to me, and doesn't justify a new rack in any way that I can see.

Enigine shaking and rough take off

If the plug wires were off there's a good chance that you have fouled a spark plug or two causing the engine to misfire making it shake. It sounds like a good tune-up might be in order.

It sounds as if you have a cylinder missfire. It may be caused from a bad spark plug or plug wire, it may also be a faulty coil. I would start by having these items checked, if they check out ok then proceed with a compression test on all cylinders.

It sounds like a clogged catalytic converter. If you can unbolt it; try unbolted it and see how it runs. Also try unplugging the sparkplug wire one at a time and see if the shaking gets worse or stays the same. When you pull a spark plug wire and the car stops shaking then that cylinder isn't firing. Watch out though, you'll get a nasty shock if you do it without insulated pliers. It could be a stuck valve or bad ignition.

removing the can sensor and it fixes the problem indicates that you need to replace that sensor

Try replacing spark plug wires. Probably one grounding out sometimes.

Hi,You may have ,wrong (calipers) or not original rims, chech if you did not installed the right and left calipers in the proper order and be sure to bleed the brake lines properly .Hope this will help you.....
