That is correct the most common reason for this type of problem with these jeeps is the crank sensor, the sensor is hard to see and is a little tight to get at, a lift would be the ideal way to replace it but if one is not available then on the ground will have to do. lets see if i can get you a diagram.okay im not sure what engine is in your jeep but its a 6 cylinder or an 8 cylinder engine.if you have the 6 cylinder engine the sensor is on the left side near the top of the trany housing but if you have the 8 cylinder then its on the rightside near the top. heres a diagram of the 8 cylinder engine the 5.2 this shows you the rightside from standing behind the trany. hope this is helpful. good luck. Note; if you have the 4.0 engine it the same area just on the leftside.
vehicle has most likely thrown rod thru water jacket in block or they ran it hot till a gasket say headgasket let go and be filled cylinders with water it may not turn over remove sparkplugs first and try to turn over water in cylinder will not compress so locks up engine i have seen people try to start with water in cylinder and it bend connecting rod good luck and remember the saying drive it like you stole it!!!!!
I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 6 cylinder. You might want to check the Ignition Off Draw (IOD) fuse in the Electrical Power Distribution center located in the black box located just in front of the coolant fill container on the left side under the hood. This is a 40 amp fuse, orange in color and is the orange fuse closest to the firewall. This fuse is used to put the jeep in storage if you don't plan to drive it for a while. Which would stop the current flow and not allow your battery to die. GOOD LUCK!
