Odds are these cars do use the same fluids. Back in the late 70's most transmissions used 90w oil. But these new cars normally use regular dexron mercon tranny fluid. You know the pretty bright red kind. But if you want to make sure just call your local dealer they will tell ya.

I have a 2000 Volvo s40. Yesterday my automatic transmission light began blinking. I stopped by my local volvo dealership this morning and they told me the light only blinks when you need a new...

I would change out the transmission fluid and put some transmission additives in there, see how the transmission shifts after that. Worse case have the transmission rebuilt.

The struts are about $150 apiece plus labor. If the car runs fine besides those two problems I would fix it and keep it, it's alot cheaper than a car payment.

What type of fluid does it need

Transmission fluid? If so Volvo uses 3 different types of A/T fluid. Look in your owner's manual or if you do not have one make a call to your nearest Volvo dealer. You want to use the correct fluid and not to guess.

Where is the drain plug located on a Volvo 2000

There no tranny drain plug, you must drop the pan to change the fluid and filter. Standard fluid is fne. I believe Dextron3 but double check with the autoparts store (tell them you have a volvo) and they can lookup the correct type of ATF.

Can you use Transmission fuild for power steering fluid

Yes, You can but do not use Power steering fluid as transmission fluid. It is recommended that you use powersteering fluid in the p/s system but in a small "dose" the transmission fluid is an acceptable alternative.

Add transmission fluid

Hello dawn_hadley4,

Thank you for choosing fixya.com. Chances are, you have purchased a new model of which there is no dipstick for checking the tranny fluid. I know that an earlier model of the Isuzu Trooper had the same thing and drove me crazy looking for the silly dipstick only to find out there isn't one. The situation is this. Supposedly, one does not need to change the fluid for several (over 3,000) miles before having the fluid changed. However, though it may appear that there is no way to change the fluid, there is infact a place to do so, however - it's tricky - you see, if you look at the top of your transmission (front wheel drive/AWdrive), there are about 3-4 plugs. Only one of these few plugs is the one for adding fluid, with one exception - the dealership (or experienced mechanic) needs to do it. The other plugs, as I am told are used for hold parts of the transmission in place on the inside, and if taken out, severe and excruciating damage can be done. So, I would suggest contacting the Volvo dealer or service center and finding out more about this. I am no certified mechanic, and can tell you I have never worked on a Volvo, there I recommend taking it to someone who has and can serve a much better purpose them I , or accomplishing this task for you.
I do thank you however, agian, and sincerely, for choosing fixya.com for answers to this questions. It is a frustraing one I know, and my sincere apologize for my inability to help you better.
Good luck, and I hope you'll rate this information and deem it no less than helpful. Thank you, and take care.
