Question about 2005 Ford Freestar

1 Answer

2005 Ford Freestar, 62,000mi

We have had the van since January 08. About 2 weeks ago we experienced the van shut down twice within about 5 minutes.
I had just filled the tank up with gas that morning. I had my mechanic look at it Monday morning and there were no codes and he could not find anything wrong. We have driven it since then with no problems until this past Tuesday when after filling the gas tank up the night before, the engine died again. All three time it died, I have been able to get it started with no problem.

Any ideas?

We are going to head back home (8 hr drive) after a vacation.

Thanks

David Carle

2005 Freestar 3.9L engine suddenly stopped, 12000 miles. After few minutes starts again, then stops. Pushing the fuel pump reset in the rear by the jack allowed it to restart instantly instead of waiting. Engine light problem light stayed on. Had it diagnosed, code 1336 which is a nonspecific error. Reset the light and its fine now. No idea, warranty expires in two months. Will take it to a dealer, but suspect they won't be able to fix it when its working.

The fuel pump reset button is the only thing I can think of to try when your problem occurs. As for your mechanic, believe it or not, might not tell you everything he knows until you guarantee him the work or his equipment isn't able to get the codes that a dealers can. If you have any warranty at all I would make sure that if you have anymore problems to take it to the dealerr and let them do their job. And another thing that might not be related, but is very important on Ford vehicles is that you secure the gas cap completely or it will set a code for that alone! Ford suggests in their manual 3/4 turn or better after the clicks, but it's best to do it until you can't stand it anymore.

2005 Ford Freestar has started contantly beeping when in any gear except park. Sounds like it is coming from inside - in the back of the van. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem we got the van checked there is NOTHING wrong with the engine. it just randomly beeps its a set of 5 beeps about 4 times. its seems like it could be a check engine sound but no lights are on the dash.

Ford Freestar Shut off problem

It is normal for the check engine light to come on anytime the engine stops running. If I were you and I took it to the shop I wouldn't say anything about what has been tried because it obviously isn't the problem. If you know someone that has a code reader or better yet someone that has an Autotap code reader have them check for error codes in the PCM.
If you have high millage on the van It could be a fuel problem such as a plugged fuel filter our even a fuel pump going bad. Can be checked with a pressure gauge hooked to the fuel rail.
On Freestars when the engine just dies they will set many different codes. Not all of them point to the problem, some of them set just because the engine died and was not turned off.

04' Ford FreeStar - The Radio Stay On When Van Is Off

Nothing wrong with it. When you remove the key, it stays on for about 20 minutes. It gives you time to finish listening to your radio and roll up the window. Once the driver door is open, everything shuts off or if 20 minutes has passed.

2005 Ford Freestar Want start sometimes.

A late reply; I'm sure you have found the problem by now-
It sounds as if the battery (old and new) are not receiving sufficient charge.
Check the drive belt tension and add a cheap digital multimeter to your 'tools.'  These can be had for well under $20 US and you can then check across the battery terminals to see if the charge voltage is between ~ 13-14.3 volts at an idle. In no case should it be lower than 13 volts with the engine running since the nominal battery voltage is 12.6 volts when fully charged.
You may have a separate regulator that is ill.
