Question about 2003 Honda Accord

1 Answer

My 2003 Honda Accord will not let me shift the car into gear. When I press the brake, the silver button on the shifter will not depress,so I cannot go into any gear. Then after from trying from 10-30 minutes,it will AMAZINGLY go into gear and I will be on my way.Can I,a simply layman fix this problem myself? Or am I going to have to have a mechanic fix it? Thanks. Michael Lee

I have the same problem right now. It is more than likely the stoplight switch which is only about $10 I am waiting for part to see if fixes problem. If you are having same problem your brake lights will not work either.

I had this problem as well. There is a very small opening beside the gear. You have to lift the plastic cover off...stick a screw driver to press the button and reset it...

Honda had some shift interlock problems about the time your car was built. Go to: nhtsa.dot.gov website and see if there is a recall for your car or a TSB. Like the other guy said, it could be a bad brake light switch or it could be out o adjustment.

Where is the fuse for the gear shifter on a 1997 Honda Accord Station Wagon EX

First, what is exactly happening? as there is no fuse for Gear shifter.

Is the car not going out of park? If so, then check the Brake switch. Brake has to be depressed which operates the brake switch sending signal to the gear shifter to unlock so it can be shifted. If Brake switch is okay then only a mechanical obstruction is preventing the shifter operation. For this you will have to take of the cover on the gear shifter to see what is fouling.

It is not your brake lights that are keeping you from getting out of park. There is a pressure switch located under the brake pedal that when the brake is depressed will open the circuit to unlock the gear shifter. Some are compressed as well depending on the manufacturer.

My honda accord 2003 automatic wont let me put gear shift from Park To drive. I cant press de button to make it get to drive

Sounds like your brake interlock is not working. You can manually override it. Check your owners manual, but there should be a small square around the trim around the shifter. Pry up the square and there is a release mechanism to manually release the solenoid. It should be covered in your owners manual how to override it.
I think to replace it you need to take apart the shifter trim.

Sounds like brake pedal or shifter release switch is defective. I recommend bringing the vehicle to a transmission repair shop.

If you press the Break pedal and the shift button does not engage, Your Solenoid did not activate to release it out of park. either the: solenoid is out - Bent levers - Solenoid harness disconnected - Break activation wire may be damaged. this piece is easy to replace as it sits on the right side (passanger side) of the shift lever. remove center console cover to access the soleniod which is held on by two 10mm nuts. and a C- clamp

Stuck in Park - 2001 Honda Accord 4cyc - Automatic

there is a solenoid on the shifter assembly that allows you to depress the button on the shifter to shift from park. this solenoid is controlled by the brake light switch on your brake pedal arm under the dash. you could have a bad brake light switch, bad wiring, or a bad solenoid on the shifter assembly. if your brake lights work properly, the brake light switch should be okay, and you'd start checking wiring to the solenoid. if the wiring tests good then you should replace the solenoid. you may need to buy the entire shifter assembly as most solenoids are not available seperatly.

2003 honda accord alarm problem

Check Brake pedal sensor (contact behind pedal), this part tends to break on alot of Hondas it will apear broken most likely. If that's not the issue you could try to check or pull fuses that are associated with the alarm (check owners manual). To overide the shifter there is a small tab next to the shifter itself pop this up with a screwdriver and then depress the tab underneath, while depressing the tab shift the vehicle out of gear. You may ask why the brake pedal sensor? When you change your car into gear from park you have to depress the brake pedal, when you depress the brake pedal the sensor becomed engaged and sends a signal to the cpu which sends a signal to a sensor by your shifter and unlocks it. If the brake pedal sensor is broken or faulty it will not engage properly and there will be no signal sent.

1999 accord; no brake lights and wont shift to reverse.

Check the switch and relays. They are connected to the brake lever. When the brake is depressed the switch will turn on the brake light. Another relay will release the transmission lever to allow it to be moved from PARK to other gears(safety feature). You probably should hear a clicking when you press the brakes.

94 honda accord hard to shift from park

You seem to have two (2) separate problems one may be a BAD brake light switch this switch is mounted at the top of BRAKE pedal and control the locking mechanism on gear shifter(safety component-for example if a kid is sitting in seat with vehicle running he/she will NOT be able to put vehicle in gear without stepping on brake). The other problem is a BAD shifter cable-this cable moves the selector in the transmission when you move shift knob. Good luck and thanks for using FIX YA
