Question about 1990 Jaguar XJ6

1 Answer

Fuel Stench Hi, I have a used Jag Sovreign, like 1990 or something, and there is an extremely pungent fuel smell all through the car. I've taken it to a hundred mechanics and they never help in the least, not even at the jag dealership. Could someone give me some possible causes of this problem?

I have a '90 XJ6 Sov also and have an ongoing war with identical fuel odor. It is something to do with either the drain line or the vent line. I pulled everything out of my trunk and messed with those lines and have been able to get the odor completely fixed for a couple weeks. i think the blockage has returned.

Have you checked the drain line that is connected to the boot within the filler area,,?,,some gas may be dripping onto/ into the boot,,,then draining into your trunk,,,,there should be a water line running from the boot,,,thru your trunk then out the bottom of the trunk. Some gas may be draining into the water line and if the line is not going out the trunk then it may be drippijng into your trunk. also check to see if you cap is fitting correctly,,
i get a gass smell ever once and awhile,,but mostly no smell at all.
i hope this may help...

the problem is your fuel lines, in the engine room over the upper planum. they are pretty old and they will crack. Usually that samell comes when starting the engine in cold. Probebly your fuel line are finito. Change them all.

I had asked about my jag smelling like it was flooding cuaseing it to bog out on me, it is a 1990 xj6 4ltr jag

Well your car is a fuel injected engine which means than there is a different set of problems. You still could have something as simple as a bad fuel cap or a clogged vapor return line to the fuel tank.A fuel injected car is really never supposed to "flood" as the computer controls the amount of fuel allowed into the engine via the fuel injectors. You could have a fuel injector seal bad which is allowing fuel to seep out and air to seep in causing the "bogging' effect when you press on the gas.If after running it,you pull the spark plugs and they seem very "wet" with fuel, then you could have a computer problem which is allowing more fuel than is needed through the injectors.Outside of the few visual checks for leaks and or hose dry rotting,if you are not having any check engine lights coming on,then you may have to have it checked by someone with a computer reader.Try and narrow down where the fuel smell is coming from if you can.The engine or the rear of the car.If it is from the rear, replace the gas cap.If it is front the engine, look for any visible signs of fuel, then check the plugs.

I just came up on a 1995 gmc sierra 1500 truck. everything seems fine except it burns way too much fuel. im aware this is a fuel guzzler but this is extreme. im getting about 6 miles to the gallon. is...

The fuel regulator just keeps enough fuel pressure for the injectors. When the fuel is at the right pressure it just goes back into the tank. 6 mpg is definately not right. The only thing I can think of that would use that much fuel is a leak. I am sure you would have notices the smell of gas though. Even if the o2 sensors were bad it would not use that much gas. What engine is in your truck?

1990 Dodge Shadow cranks strong but wont turn over. Could it be the fuel pump relay. Doesn't seem to be a injector. Any advice

Yes the possibility in such cases can be the fuel or the spark . So if you think there is a stench of the fuel supply then the fuel pump must be checked out , if a calibration is done to confirm the fuel pressure.
Also once the fuel system is cleared the spark intensity must checked, check for HT coil , wires and plugs to be working in good order.

Fuel fail 89

THAT WOULD BE THE "PURGE CONTROL VALVE CIRCUIT". IT HAS TO DO WITH EMISSIONS. THE PURGE CONTROL VALVE ALLOWS VAPORS FROM THE FUEL TANK TO BE BURNED, BUT IN THIS CASE IT HAS MALFUNCTIONED. HOPE THIS HELPS. KEEP ME INFORMED. THANKS FOR USING FIX-YA AND THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR AN HONEST RATING. BEST OF LUCK.

Where is the fuel filter

Hi redbeans29,
fuel filter is under the car on drivers side, just about under where a rear passenger's feet rest.the filter is in the box looking mount that's held up by 12mm bolts.the fuel pump is right beside it.(filter is the one with NO wires hitched to it.you'll have to loosen 10mm bolt in middle to get it out.(of course you have to unhitch fuel lines first."CAUTION"-fuel is under" EXTREME" amount of "PRESSURE"!!
good luck ron
