Question about 1997 Chevrolet S-10 Pickup

1 Answer

My truck dies out when stepping on the pedal more than a third of the way

I have a 97 S10 (4.3 L. X Vortech) with an annoying problem. I have installed a whole new exhaust system and O2 sensors before & after the Cat. Converter. I have replaced the fuel pump, filter, injector assy., TPS Sensor, MAP Sensor, Ignition Module, Distributor Cap & Rotor Button, New Plugs, Mass Airflow Sensor but the truck stalls out when you try to put it in passing gear. The idle gas pressure is between 50 & 60 psi. When you rev up the engine or go down the road in it and mash the pedal to the metal it drops the gas pressure to 10 - 20 psi. I thought the gas pressure should at least stay the same and if not increase when mashing the pedal. I have also replaced the computer with a salvage one with the same service # and it didn"t help. I have not found a mechanic yet in TN. that can fix it and I have about $1500.00 in parts and labor in it. I hope you guys are smart and can help me with this problem. LOL -Brad-

Your right about the fuel pump. It was an airtex and it was bad from the time I paid for it. The mechanics changed other parts because the pump was new. I took it to an old redneck and he found the problem right away. He has replaced 2 airtex fuelpumps this week on one truck and the 3rd time made the parts store give him a BOSCH at the same price and the problem was solved. I am gona call and demand a reimbursement for the labor I paid the second time to have my fuel pump changed. Thanks to Airtex I have spent an arm and a leg on mechanics. I guess the mechanics should have paid more attention also. I'm a HVAC repair man and I know you can get bad parts but you have to make sure the new parts are not bad before changing a bunch of parts! Every now and then I get reminded of this lesson just as soon as I let my guard down!

You were right guill about the fuel pump. It was an Airex and it was bad from the time it came off the shelf.

I read your problem.
I have some ideas about that.
You are right, The pressure should stay olmost the same.
But, I'm , involved in problem with aftermarket fuel pump.
I recomend A/C delco or Carter. fuel pump.

Check the Pressure regulator, that goes in the rail of the injectors. Inside of the intake, Some times is leaking.

Check the EGR valve, The carbon make the valve no close correctly, Take it out and check the pivot, they have to stay close.

Check the ground in all around of the car, speciallity the one on the frame rear , for the fuel pump.

If after all you still have the problem, Disconect the transmission seleniod connector, and put in drive, if the problem go out.
check for short cicuit in the wires and connector a transmission..

Is there more thing, but I hope this help on someting.

Sounds like a fuel pressure issue. Have you changed your fuel filter lately ?

I have a1995 s10 with a 4.3 five speed non vortech. While on the highway the fuel gauge will jump way past full and die then go down back down and run fine then repeat again every few minutes.

the engine dies or the fuel gauge dies? has anyone replaced the fuel pump? maybe check the ground wire , its attached to the frame near the fuel filler inlet. (left rear wheel area)

Not sure but it might be fuel enjecters . this blazer is a 94 with a 4.3L vortech and right now it wont run. the last couple weeks its been dieing while at an idle or when goining down the road. iiit...

if you encountered a power loss problem i would start with replacing the fuel filter mounted inside the driver side frame rail about mid vehicle. once the filter is replaced, purchase a bottle of BG44K fuel system cleaner. pour the entire bottle into your fuel tank and fill tank with fuel. this will clean fuel system, injectors, valves, and cylinders. depending on amount of carbon build up this step can be repeated.
