Buy yourself a Service manual, and go step by step. Take your time, and make sure you never trust the jack, always put the car on a stand.

04 cavalier makes grinding noise in front end turn the wheel to the right grinding gets worse turn the wheel to the left grinding stops. it sounds worse at 40mph and above. what would cause this?

3 things to check:
Worn disc brake pads, grinding against the rotor.
Wheel bearing
cv joint.
You posted grinding gets worse turning to the right, the problem is the driver side wheel, but it would be best to have both wheeles checked.

1997 chevy cavalier brake problems

A slick surface has nothing to do with it, it would actually be less of a noise on a slick surface, and if its a wet road, the water acts as lubricant on the pads, it sound like the job was done wrong, a pad clip broke, they did not clean the rotor( bad groves or chips in rotor, may had needed a resurface)
or they did resurface the rotor too good and the pads glazed over and are like to hard surfaces touching.
You need someone to pull the front two tires and inspect the calipers and rotors, someone that knows what they are doing. If the pads are still new and the rotor is slick,(very smooth ) they need to be ruffed up with a coarse sand paper, or the sand disk that mechanics use on rotors.

ABS, Brake Light Are On

ABS is near the breaks when you take the tire off and the break pads you will see it it is very small part that is a sensor. mine went on my car when the guys were putting my breaks on it it really has not made to much of a difference in the breaks. they are costly so I just deal with the ABS light for now til summer

It sound like ABS break sensor is out. most likely would be in the rear sensors or simply you need break pads.

There is a leak in my chevy cavalier brake line

Depending on the condition of the line you could splice in a replacement line. You will need to flare your line where it is good at the front and back and that will determine your length.

How to put front breaks on a 1999 chevy automatic cavalier

Place the bike on a stand, disconnect the cable, remove the wheel, set the wheel brake side up, use the bolt slightly inserted in the drum, or two oposing screw drivers around the drum to pull it from the wheel. Once pulled, remove the springs and shoes, lightly sand the inner drum on the wheel, install new pads and springs, spray both drums with brake clean, reassemble drums and wheel, install the wheel, and then adjust cable tension and brake pressure at first the wheel, and then at the bars. Test and readjust as needed.
