I am having the same problem with my wife's car. 99 Beetle. The Tape/CD/FM/AM buttons feel "dead" like they aren't connecting the actual buttons behind them. There's no "click" on the buttons like there used to be.

    Any ideas?

I have the same problem and more for my June 98 Beetle. Now, if the radio is on, it will beep and switch to the TAPE mode (mind you no tape is in there) & then says ERROR. The FM won't stay on. Is it just time for a new Radio?

    Thanks. Jean

The face plate buttons actually activate small buttons on a printed circuit board behind the face plate. When I removed the radio and then the face plate many small pieces of plastic fell from behind the face plate. These small plastic pieces align the face plate button to the printed circuit board buttons. My Beeetle is almost 10 1/2 years old so I imagine the plastic is just becoming brittle with age. I could not set the radio to FM, so I removed the face plate button and now slide a toothpick in the slot to toggle between FM1 & FM2. Not he best solution, but probably the most inexpensive one. I also made my on tool to remove the radio from a diagram found at: http://www.alientech.net/nbinfo/stereo.html

New Beetle 2002 Hi-Beam lights only flash, don't stay on, what can I do?

I would test the relay to make sure it is still good and everything there is working like it is supposed to. I would also look at the switch and make sure noting came unplugged and it is still in good working order sometimes new parts are still bad.

My 1998 vw beetle its stuck on 2 safe mode i need help getting that out thanks

First of all you should exit from 2 safe mode. Then turn ON the radio and let it turned ON for at least one hour, in order to exit from 2 safe mode.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
You must have the security anti-theft code for your VW radio from the car manufacturer, or from a VW dealer!

You can find the radio code at: http://www.radio-code.co.uk/

The sequence of VW radio programming is:
1. Push simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys until on the screen will appear "1000" displayed.
2. Release keys. No more push on "SCAN" and "RDS" keys because otherwise number "1000" will be considered as first safe code attempt.
For example: we have the security code "5079". Then:
3. By the no.# 1 key you will set up the first safe code digit. Push 5 times on the no.# 1 button. The "5" number will be setted.
4. By the no.# 2 key you will set up the second safe code digit. Push 10 times on the no.# 2 button. The "0" number will be setted.
5. By the no.# 3 key you will set up the third safe code digit. Push 7 times on the no.# 3 button. The "7" number will be setted.
6. By the no.# 4 key you will set up the four-th safe code digit. Push 9 times on the no.# 4 button. The "9" number will be setted.
7. Then push again simultaneous "SCAN" and "RDS" keys for confirm this safe code. On the screen will be displayed "SAFE" notice. Release keys! For few seconds a radio frequence will be displayed.

The radio is now ready for use!

How to enter the radio code? 1999 beetle

When you turn your radio on (usually after interupting power to the vehicle) you will get a "safe" message on the radio face plate. After 3 seconds you will get 4 numbers. Enter the assigned 4 digit number by using the preset radio buttons 1-4. Once you get the number in, push the ">" portion of the "scan" button until you get an audible "beep." Your radio should be back in business
