Question about 1996 Ford Explorer

A/C clutch will not engage automatically

I have charged the A/C and it is full and if I jumper across the Clutch to the battery I can get it to engage but not by itslef. I have swapped the relay out with the fuel pump relay with no change. I have checked the fuse inside the vehicle on the side of the Dashboard. I have rewired from the clutch to the first junction and it worked for 1 evening and now does not work any more. I did notice that there was a loop in the wiring off the clutch but I ran I ran it back straight. Any help would be appreciated. Is there a fusable link in this wiring and should I re-wire the loop?
Thanks,

FIRST THOUGHT, I WOULD REWIRE THE LOOP EXACTLY LIKE IT CAME ORIGINALLY. NEXT YOU NEED TO CHECK THE LOW PRESSURE SWITCH LOCATED ON THE DRYER. YOU CAN DO THIS BY UNPLUGING THE SWITCH AD JUMPING THE TWO WIRES ON THE HARNESS. IF THE COMPRESSOR COMES ON, I WOULD SUSPECT THE LOW PRESSURE SWITCH TO BE BAD. LET ME KNOW IF THIS HELPS.

A/c clutch is not kicking on in 1994 E320

How do you know the freon charge is not low ?
If the system is full, you should be able to jumper the relay and make the compressor clutch engage.
If not, the problem could be the low pressure switch or the clutch.

When i turn the a/c on in my 99 lincoln town car it only blows out heat

Make sure that the clutch on the compressor is engaging when you turn on the A/C. If not using a circuit tester check the connector at the compressor to make sure it is getting power for the clutch to engage. If there is a current at the connection then its the clutch if no current use a jumper wire from the battery to the clutch and see if it engages. If it does its the dashboard switch.

2000 Buick LeSabre a/c clutch will not engage. Fuse is good, can't tell if micro relay is ok or not, no power at compressor clutch plug when a/c is turned on. Are there other switches (full throttle...

There is a low refridgerant pressure switch, and a high refridgerant pressure switch. Either can cut the power to the clutch. You will have to check the pressure in the system to know for sure.
The electrical part in the clutch could be bad. You could run jumper wires to the clutch connector to see if it will engage. If not, its the clutch. If it does engage, then more than likely your just low on refridgerant, and possibly have a tiny leak.

When you changed the compressor, did you recharge the AC system? If the pressure switches are not actuated by the correct pressure, the system will not engage the clutch. To charge the system you have to pump a vacuum on the system for about an hour. Follow the new compressor instructions as to the amount of oil that may be in it and how much the system calls for. See it has the correct type oil and the correct amount, then charge with the correct refridgerant and the correct amount.

Ac compressor not engaging it is a new compressor and clutch and we just had it charged

Double check that the charge was enough. There is a pressure switch on the refrigerant line that is inline with the wire that powers the clutch for your compressor. You can check it with an ohm meter. Disconnect the two wires and check. If the system is charged properly, there should be full continuity across the pressure switch. You can check the clutch at the same point. Take the wire that goes from the switch to the clutch and supply battery power to it. It should click positively.

A/c has full freon but the compressor clutch wont engage. i have found that the plug going into the compressor is not getting any power. what could be the problem?

On the low pressure line of the ac you have a pressure switch which allows the compressor to come on once a certain pressure is reached, and it will cut the compressor off if the pressure is too high or too low. Look at your ac hose and find the switch *you will see wires connected to it* you may need to replace this switch. You can use a test light to see if you are getting power to the switch. You should check you fuses, and the ac relay witch is usually in a black plastic box under the hood.

you can jumper the low presser switch to in gage the clutch until you have enough freon in the a/c unit to keep the Freon low presser switch in gaged.hope this helps.

My a/c clutch engages/disengages frequently sometimes.

your AC system is low on refridgerent charge, this is caused by a leak in the system, the most common cause on this car is the front shaft seal of the AC compressor on your engine, have the whole system twested for leaks and recharge with TYPE R134 refridgerent
