It would help if you were a little more specific with the year, make, model. etc. but usually with the newer fuel injected cars, excessive cranking means that the check valve on the fuel pump at the fuel tank is leaking. When the car sits the pressurized fuel rail at the engine loses its pressure due to the check valve leaking and you must crank the engine several times to build the pressure back up.
