Fuel-pump Repair How do I repair --or figure out if a repair is possible-- the fuel-pump?

    Dear Chris,

The fuel pump is not inside the fuel tank of my "86 Nova. You get at it by lifting the hood.

Anyway, I simply took it out and installed a new one. I didn't fool around trying to repair it. The motor now functions normally.

Thanks for your imput, but you'd better check out the manual on the location.

    Regards,

    Jack Owens

Fuel pump is cam lobe driven and located under hood near fuel filter in 1.6 L engine for 1986 Chevy Nova. 2 bolts hold it down. Replace, usually not repairable.

Trouble troubleshooting

Dirty fuel filter, clogged injector(s) water in fuel, dirty air filter. try fuel additive to clean injectors and remove water. replace air filter, fuel filter. possible could be the injector pump, would have to do a pressure check on fuel rail.

You should stick with the in-tank fuel pump and repair it. The computer requires signals for your engine to run and bypassing this would require addressing those issues too. It is also possible there is blockage in the in-tank filter. The inline "cut in" is more work then the original repair. Be Very Carefull while working around these componets and have fire extinguisher equipment.

Acura Coupes and Sedans 1994-2000 Repair Information

PGM-FI Main Relay

Print
This relay is located behind the dashboard's lower cover. It consists of two individual relays. One is energized whenever the ignition is ON , thus supplying battery voltage to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This relay also supplies voltage to the fuel injectors, and power to the second relay. The second relay is energized for two seconds, when the engine is turned ON , to power the fuel pump.
See Figure 1

Fig. Fig. 1: Schematic of the PGM-FI relay
Testing
If the engine starts and continues to run, the PGM-FI relay is working and does not need to be replaced.
See Figure 2

Fig. Fig. 2: PGM-FI relay terminal numbers

  1. Remove the relay.
  2. Apply battery voltage to the number three terminal.
  3. Ground the number two terminal.
  4. Check for continuity between terminals five and two.
  5. If continuity is detected, proceed to the step 7.
  6. If there is no continuity, replace the relay.
  7. Connect the number four terminal to the positive side of the battery.
  8. Ground the number two terminal of the relay.
  9. Check for continuity between the number five terminal and the number two terminal of the relay.
  10. If there is continuity, the relay checks out "OK". If the fuel pump still does not work, test the harness.
  11. If there is no continuity, replace the relay and retest.

Gas leaks out of my gas tank recently had a fuel pump put on could that had caused the problem

Yes, it is a very good possibility that replacing the fuel pump did cause the fuel leak at the fuel tank, especially if the vehicle did not leak fuel from the fuel tank before the fuel pump was replaced, and the seal to the fuel sending unit/fuel pump assembly might have slipped out of place or was damaged when the fuel sending unit/fuel pump assembly was installed onto the fuel tank, the fuel lines might not be properly attached to the fuel sending unit/fuel pump assembly, the filler hose to the fuel tank might not be properly tightened, or even damage to a fuel line, the fuel tank itself, or a vent, from not properly installing the fuel tank into the vehicle. Those would all be a problem with quality workmanship and if any of those reasons are responsible for the fuel leak and the repairs were done at a repair facility then they should warranty the repair for their mistake at no additional cost to you.

However, road debris could also have damaged the vehicle and that would not be anything that would be covered by a warranty, and someone who is qualified and objective should inspect the vehicle to determine exactly where the fuel leak is coming from so that a proper course of action can be decided.

Car killed at 60 mph cannot hear fuel pump when I turn the key

The owner of the car should know or be able to locate and be able to service the fuel pump.Prepare the tools and equipment in servicing the fuel pump.so that fuel pump will operate .Locate the fuel pump .Disconnect fuel lines from the fuel pump.Remove the fuel pump from the engine .Dis -assemble the fuel pump.Check diaphram for defect.Replace defective parts.Assemble and install the fuel pump . But if the owner of the car don't have time to repair the car fuel pump then, the owner of the car should go to a car mechanic and the mechanic will do the job.
