I need a picture of both the under carriage steering system and the suspension system on my Chevy Tracker

    My 2000 Chevy Tracker steering feels like it is catching when I turn. There is very little power assist occuring while this is happening. There are no noises.

well there are many places for steering to go loose.
a mech finds that exact spot, first.
you didnt so there will be no answers
its a hands on deal.

when we find that SPOT
we replace the part that is bad.
even tilt steering parts
i count the spots.

Suspension and steering noises also need to be checked out as soon as possible to be safe. When a suspension component, such as a tie rod end or a ball joint is badly worn, it can separate, sometimes even causing the vehicle to lose control. If you hear a knocking or other noise from the steering or suspension, have it checked out. Here are few examples of the typical suspension and steering noises. Of course, there could be a lot more problems in the suspension and steering that can cause various noises. Any noise should be properly diagnosed.

Purchased focus sport 2006 model no service manual. Mileage 43,000 kms. Need to know service intervals either time/mileage perhaps a copy of the service schedule will suffice.

Vibration in steering when brakes applied


It is possible that there are some loose links on the suspension or the steering section.
So an under inspection is needed to check for any damage to the suspension or the steering.
tighten the bolts holding the steering links, the balance rods, the wheel hubs , the front suspension.
Also check the wheel balancing, the brake discs and the wheel bearings( bearing assembly) as this can cause the same fault.

My chevy silverado 2500 shakes like crazy when i hit a bump on the road


Your steering damper that controls the steering system's lateral motion is a shock absorber mounted to the steering components under the vehicle. This is most likely the cause of the shaking. Also inspect the tie rod ends and all other suspension systems for possible failure.

i would check the power steering fluid level. if thats ok. then i would bet its your power steering pump. other possibilities although rare are :
if its power assisted rack and pinion, rack may need to be replaced if its damaged or corroded on the inside. or could be a pinched hose in the power steering hose routing. Wrong fluid in the power steering pump (causing the valves to swell shut) this happens when quick lube places put the wrong fluids in the wrong places. ( i went to one and they put the wrong fluid in my brakes and had to have my master cylinder replaced and brake system flushed... yes they denied it still cost me 350.00) also could be damaged suspension parts causing the resistance to your steering. hope this gives you some leads to find out whats up.

I have a 1998 ford expedition eddie bauer with front air bag suspension and after driving for about 45 minutes the air suspension light comes on. what's the problem and how do I fix it


here's some info. Do you have a warning light on or does it say "Check Susp"?

Control Module
NOTE: The 4-wheel air suspension (4WAS) control module is also used for the rear air suspension (RAS) system. The internal processor recognizes external circuitry to determine if it is installed in a 4WAS or a RAS system.
NOTE: The air suspension control module is calibrated with information from the air suspension height sensors. A new or swapped air suspension control module requires the ride height adjustment calibration process to be performed.
A microcontroller-based electronic air suspension control module controls the air compressor motor (through a solid state relay), and all system solenoids. The air suspension control module also provides power to front and rear height sensors. The air suspension control module controls vehicle height adjustments by monitoring the two height sensors, vehicle speed, a steering sensor, acceleration input, the door ajar signal, transfer case signals, and the brake pedal position (BPP) switch. The air suspension control module also conducts all fail-safe and diagnostic strategies and contains self-test and communication software for testing of the vehicle and related components.
The air suspension control module is mounted in the passenger compartment inside the instrument panel, above the radio and temperature controls. The air suspension control module is interchangeable between the RAS and 4WAS system.
The air suspension control module monitors and controls the system through a 32-pin two-way connector. The air suspension control module is keyed so that it cannot be plugged into an incorrect harness. There are two sides of the harness connection to the air suspension control module. Each is uniquely colored and keyed to prevent reversing the connections.
Solenoid, Air Spring
swj~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif WARNING: Never rotate an air spring solenoid valve to the release slot in the end cap fitting until all pressurized air has escaped from the spring to prevent damage or injury.
The air spring solenoid:
  • Allows air to enter and exit the air spring during leveling operations.
  • Is electrically operated and controlled by the air suspension control module.
  • Is only replaced as a unit.
Air Suspension Diagnostic Connector
The air suspension diagnostic connector is used to aid the technician in diagnosing the air suspension system. It is also used to vent the system of compressed air when air suspension system components need to be repaired or replaced. The air suspension diagnostic connector is located under the steering column.
Steering Sensor
The steering sensor is mounted inside the passenger compartment on the steering column. It provides steering rate and position to the air suspension control module through two signals.
Pressure Relief Valve
The pressure relief valve (PRV) protects the rear air suspension components by venting the system to a specific pressure in the case of a system malfunction. The system will decrease the pressure to an acceptable level to maintain vehicle height. In the normal operation mode with normal system pressure the PRV is constantly closed and does not have any effect on the system performance or function. The PRV is replaceable without any air lines.
The PRV is located in the rear of the vehicle on the middle of crossmember #5 as a part of the rear air line assembly.

Suspension and steerin wheel


It is difficult to just assess wut is causing the suspension knock. U will have to go under the vehicle or let someone who is experience about this do it. Go under the vehicle and check the entire suspension system, steering ends, rack ends, ball joionts, rubber bushings etc. Well u said u have changed ur shocks but no difference. As for the squeaks, this might be coiming from the universal joint from the steering column. Like I said they really have to be inspected.

Power steering rack


jj, here's the procedure:
turn ignition key to locked position and turn steering wheel to the left until the wheel is locked. Remove key.
While vehicle still on ground disconnect the steering column shaft coupler from the steering gear intermediate coupler. Remove the cotter key the nut and the pinch bolt.
Loosen wheel lug, raise vehicle support securely w/ jack stands, remove the wheels.
Raise the insulating wrap on the power steering return hose to expose the hose clamp. Remove the hose clamp and detach the hose, Drain ps fluid thru the hose.
Remove both tie rod ends from steering knuckles.
Remove the 2 bolts and loosen the 3rd attaching the anti-lock brakes Hydraulic control Unit (HCU) to the suspension cradle.
then rotate the HCU rearward to allow access to the cradle bolt and nut just forward of the hcu.
Remove the nuts and bolts attaching the cradle plate to the bottom of the front suspension cradle, then remove cradle plate from cradle.
Remove bracket attaching power steering fluid line to the front suspension cradle.
Detach ps.fluid pressure and return lines from the ps gear.
Remove the 3 bolts and nuts mounting the steering gear to the front suspension cradle.
Lower the steering gear from the suspension cradle enough to allow access to the intermediate coupler roll pin. Install a roll pin remover/installer tool (they always get u with that darn special tool, don't they?) or equivalent set up. Pull the roll pin out of the intermediate coupler. Separate the intermediate coupler from the shaft of the steering gear Remove the steering gear assembly from the suspension cradle. Well, it's too late to give the install procedure, but u seem to have it under control, so let me know if u need more info and how u make out! Merry Christmas!
