This seems to be caused by the multifunction switch from what my research showed.

I have a 97 Chevy Lumina ls and I'm having a problem with brake lights.fuses all good it might be a tri- multi sensor switch located underneath the steering wheel But where? What does it look like?

If the turn signals work but the brake lights don't it could be the brake light switch. The switch is mounted near the floor and makes contact with the brake pedal.
You can look up the part online for a photo.

Hello, we have a 97 Mitsubishi Montero and the brake light went out on both sides. there isnt a fuse problem and the light bulb is still good what else could it be

Check down under the dash on the brake peddle arm. Looking for a switch on the arm or firewall behind it. The brake light switch may be loose in the mount there.

Brake lights won't come on after changing brake booster on 97 gmc 1500. Also won't shift into gear.

check for a bad brake light fuse! if not the fuse, the brake light switch operates brake lights and if bad you will not be able to shift it out of park, as well as the brake lights not coming on.! because you have to put foot on brake to do so. if bad switch, it wont let it out of park. it could be just out of adjustment also!! good-day !

Breaklights dont turn on to my 97 oldsmobile cutlass supreme

Hi, first check the 15 amp Stop Light Fuse. If that is good, pull the connector off the stop light switch above the brake pedal and connect the orange and light blue wires using a paper clip in the end of the connector. If you can get the lights to come on with this paper clip, replace the stoplight switch. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

97' Ford 350 diesel the cruise control quit

There is a brake light switch that ,disconnects the cruise control, when braking, this maybe the problem, even if the brake lights work fine, the switch still could cause this problem, replace the brake light switch.

'97 nissan altima, brake lights not working, wire

Lets keep it simple if the wiring harness is in good condition lets not look at that... first check your fuse if the fuse is good... check for power... if you have power coming and going from the fuse then check your brake switch ( located under the dash) attached to brake pedal. Please make sure your light bulbs are both good also. If your brake light switch is good and you have tried everything else it is either going to be in your 4 way switch or wiring harness
