Hi the problem you are having is more than likely with the brake light switch as you have to press the brake to move the shifter then it points to this not working
to locate the switch you need to get close to the brake pedal and have a look at the very top just before it goes through the bulk head into the engine, you should then see a small switch with a couple of wires coming from it, now you could check if its come loose or just needs moving slightly but the chances are it needs replacing.
its worth checking the fuses to make sure one has not gone if you look in the owners handbook it will tell you in their what each fuse is for so then locate brake light fuse and pull it out and check if its blown, if not then i would start looking at the brake light switch
let me know how you get on or if you need any further assistance ok
It is most likely a blown fuse. If you have the owner's manual, it will tell you where the box is located (usually in the engine compartment). If you do not have a manual, look for the fuse box/ relay center either under the dash or in the engine compartment. There will be a diagram on the inside cover telling which fuse is for the tail lights/ brake lights. Pull that fuse straight out of it's socket, and replace it with an appropriately rated fuse (from any auto parts store).
Check the owner's manual.
There are fuses under the hood as well as by the driver's side floor, where the hood release is.
If the cover is gone go get one at the junk yard.
Comes in handy, even a fuse puller and spares in there
If you have the owners manual for this car look in the index for fuses. This will give you specific location of which fuse protects the brake light. Fuse block is typically located under the drivers side dash, near the floor. Have you changed the bulbs?
