1992 geo metro

Hi, I have 1992 geo convertible with 3 cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. Lately the transmission stays only in high gear when in drive. I can manually shift it thru the gears without a problem. Does anyone out there have a tranny schematics for for this vehicle or know of a quick fix.
Thanks in advance.

My first 90 Geo had a similar problem. I talked to the transmission guy at the local Chevy dealer and he said that is common with this transmission. What happens is a check valve in the transmission snaps into the aluminum seat so many times that eventually the seat enlarges and the valve tends to stay there rather than dropping back down when is should. The fix was simple. I removed the oil from the transmission. Then I removed the pan from the bottom. This exposed the shifting body. I carefully removed that body and set it on the bench. When I opened it up, there were 5 balls (check valves) . I took it to the trans guy, he examined it and recommended I replace 2 of them. He gave me the balls, he had them because he was doing the same thing when he worked on the Geo. I put them in place, put a new filter/screen on, and a new gasket and reassembled it. It worked perfect. The guy knew what he was talking about and to think I almost got a new transmission instead. Mr Geo Metro leehduncan@verizon.net

The check balls I put back in were slightly larger. You should be able to get them from any transmission shop or the Chevy dealer. I got my gasket from the Chevy dealer.

HI,
I finally figured out my problem after buying a Geo shop manual off ebay. The automatic transmission control unit under the dash had gone bad. $65.00 at the junk yard and two bolts later and it runs just fine.

For $20 you can get a workshop manual. This vehicle comes in a manual gearbox or an automatic gearbox. We are not able to help you until we know which?

92 geo metro with automatic transmission will not go out of 1st gear sometimes

my guess is its not electric shifted, (what trans model is it)
so step 2 in the FSM book says.... and i paraphrase
step1 is stall test (my guess passes in 1st and reverse)
step 2, line pressure test?
if that fails, tranny is bad.

1996 geo metro ****** problem wont move unless it is reved up real hi andthen it only moves alittle bit

Had the same problem with ours. If you're not mechanically inclined, this is a total job for a qualified mechanic. Assuming this is an automatic transmission, first thing I would check is the transmission dipstick. If you see any signs of metallic particles, then chances are your transmission is ruined, and look for about a $1000 - $2000 repair bill. It could also be the torque converter, which is a cheaper fix, but still kinda pricey.

Were is spark plug number 1 at on my 3 cylinder geo metro

On GM inline engines, cylinder #1 is the one closest to the front(pulley)end of the engine. If you pulled the wires off the distributor/coil pack, and don't know where they go,put one wire one at a time and crank it.If it doesn't backfire, repeat until it starts.(this is only easy on 4 cylinder or smaller engines)

I just bought a 92 Geo Metro Convertible, which has several issues...does anyone have a repair manual for it?

Well you could look on ebay for a repair or shop manual for it, also please note that it was made and sold by suzuki as the sprint or spirit. so a suzuki manual would cover most of it. the engines were different, the GEO had a 3 cylinder while the suzuki had a 4 cylinder. i had the suzuki model back in the late 90s, it got over 40MPG. the convertible is the only car which had a crash rating so bad that you were better off getting hit as a pedestrian than getting hit while sitting inside the thing.

When was the last transmission fluid ATF and transmission filter change?

The recommended interval is 2 years or 24,000 miles.

Is the ATF color a lite pink color or it's DARK RED?

Any burn smell?

Do the old fashion drop the trans pan and filter change.

DO NOT GO TO shop that use a machine to flush your automatic transmission.

====

Most Metro automatic can go up to 140,000 miles before needing a rebuilt.

If the ATF is in lite pink and it's not burn then the most likely cause are

1)lock up torque converter is not functioning

2)transmission filter is clogged

Please rate my answer if it's useful to you.

may be low on fluid as that wont shift the pistons in the valve body of the transmission

Auto Trans I had to replace solenoid in transmission there are two of them when you drop the pan. After testing with a 12 volt battery one was bad replaced and transmission works fine. Mine was a 1996, cost about $90 for solenoid.
