Question about 1992 Chevrolet Cavalier

Abs brakes on 92 cavalier

After installing calipers, rotors and pads the peddle feels soft when I start the engine but will pump up firm with engine off. I have bled them 4 or 5 times but every time I start the engine, the pedal goes soft.

Did you follow a bleeding order? some cars do have an order that must be followed. does the car have abs? abs units go bad / have to bled as well and will give you the same effect. did you notice any leaks? aby shinny spots on any of the tires on the inside?

First you want to remove brake fluid from brake resovoir, raise front wheels off ground and set park brake or block rear wheels. Remove front wheels, keep steering wheel unlocked so you can turn rotors side to side. Loosen bolts that hold caliper end gently pry caliper free from rotor, remove caliper and remove pads, use bungy cord to hang caliper away from rotor, have rotors measured to see if they are thick enough to have machined, replace if out of specs. Match up pads with old ones, use anti- squeak red liquid and put layer on back of pads, let dry. Use tool to put pistons back into calipers, slowly put pistons back into bore while opening up bleeder screw so ABS won't be damaged. After rotors resurfaced, wash with rubbing alchohal to remove any oils from hands, install rotors and reverse putting pads back onto caliper and reinstall, torque caliper bolts to factory specs and tighten bleeder screws. Install wheels, torque lug nuts to factory specs and replace brake fluid in resovoir. Lower car carefully to ground and press brake peddle without pumping it. Any air in system should bleed out, if not get someone to help with bleeding system. Road test to ensure no squeaks or pulling, burn brakes in slowly.

The brakes on my 1998 intrepid are new. the brake hose are new, the caliper is new, everything is new except for the master cylinder. i cant figure out why my front brakes are still sticking. when i drive...


When you installed new calipers, did you bleed the lines out? Air trapped in the system can cause sticking. Unless they were sticking before you replaced all the parts. Try unplugging the ABS controller under the hood. If that does not work and there is no air in the lines then it would be 1 of 2 things.

1. Master cylinder failing to return.
2. Brake booster not providing enough vacuum.

Start the car. let it run for 10 seconds. while its running pump the brakes. let the brakes go and shut off the car. now press the peddle til it gets stiff. Now hold it down firmly. If the peddle pressure fades, replace the booster.

YOU NEED TO COMPRESS THE CALIPER PISTON USING SPECIAL TOOL 09580 - 3400 OR YOU CAN USE A LARGE C CLAMP AND THE OLD BRAKE SHOE NEXT TO CALIPER PISTON.BE SURE TO SIPHON OUT 1/3 BRAKE FLUID OUT OF THE MASTER CYLINDER BEFORE COMPRESSING CALIPER PISTON BACK IN THE CALIPER BORE.WHEN YOU FINISH REPLACING REPLACING REAR BRAKE SHOES.MAKE SURE BRAKE MASTERCYLINDER RESERVOIR COVER BACK ON RESERVOIR BACK IN PLACE.THEN PUMP BRAKE PEDAL TO SEAT BRAKE SHOES AGAINST ROTORS AND UNTIL YOU GET FIRM SOLID BRAKES.THEN CHECK BRAKE FLUID LEVEL.DONT DRIVE CAR IF BRAKE PEDAL FEEL SOFT NOT FIRM.CHECK FOR LEAKING BRAKE HOSE OR LEAKING CALIPER PISTON SEAL.

Normally a "pulsing" brake pedal means that that you have a warped brake rotor or the brake caliper is lose. I would start by taking the front wheel off and inspecting the brake pads and the rotor. If the brake pads are worn down bad replace them. Pay special attention to the brake rotors also as if the are grooved very bad, they should also be replaced.

REMEMBER TO REPLACE THE PADS AS WELL, NO USED PADS ON NEW ROTORS.

Raise the vehicle and support on jack stands. Remove the wheels. Place the drip pan under the caliper. Loosen the 10 mm bleeder screw on the top of the caliper.
  • Step 2 Spread the brake pads apart with the common screwdriver. Place the screwdriver in the slot in the center of the caliper where the pads can be seen. With the nose of the screwdriver, pry between the rotor and the pad and pull the caliper outward toward you. The piston is being depressed into its housing as the caliper is pulled out. When the caliper comes to its limit outward, push the caliper back away from you and insert the screwdriver into the inside pad between the pad and the rotor. Once again pull the screwdriver toward you until the caliper piston is compressed into its bore.
  • Step 3 Tighten the 10 mm bleeder screw. Remove the caliper and support it where it is not hanging on the brake hose. Letting the caliper hang on the brake hose will damage the hose and cause brake failure.
  • Step 4 Remove the caliper support if it interferes with the removal of the rotor. Some vehicles don't require the removal of the support. Remove the rotor by pulling it off. If it is stuck, hit it with a hammer a few times between the studs.
  • Step 5 Install the caliper support and caliper in the reverse order they were taken off. Install the wheels and let the vehicle down. Check the brake fluid and fill as necessary to the proper level.
  • Step 6 Start the vehicle and pump the brakes very slowly until you have a high pedal. Remember that by expanding the calipers they have to re-adjust. You will not have any braking when you first start the car. Do not try to move the car until you have pumped the brake pedal sufficiently to feel a firm pedal.
    Rear-Wheel-Drive Vehicles
  • Step 1 Raise the vehicle and support on jack stands. Remove the wheels. Place the drip pan under the caliper. Loosen the 10 mm bleeder screw on the top of the caliper.

  • Step 4 Remove the bearing cap in the center of the rotor. Remove the cotter pin. Remove the large nut that retains the bearings and rotor. Wobble the rotor with your hands and the front bearing will come out.
  • Step 5 Reinstall the spindle nut with just a few threads. Grabbing the rotor with both hands, pull the rotor off with slight down pressure and with a quick ****. The spindle nut will grab the rear bearing and seal as you pull the rotor off and come out at the same time.
  • Step 6 Install the bearings into the new rotor. Grease the bearings first and install the rear large bearing then install the grease seal with the hammer. Install the rotor on the spindle and insert the front small bearing followed by the large washer and the retaining nut.
  • Step 7 Tighten the retaining nut just until there is no longer any freeplay then tighten an additional 90 degrees. Do not over tighten the retaining nut as it will not allow the bearings to expand and they will wear out rapidly. Install the cotter pin.
  • Step 8 Install the caliper support and caliper in the reverse order they were taken off. Install the wheels and let the vehicle down. Check the brake fluid and fill as necessary to the proper level.
  • Step 9 Start the vehicle and pump the brakes very slowly until you have a high pedal. Remember that by expanding the calipers they have to re-adjust.     After removing the caliper body, unfasten the retaining bolts and remove the caliper mounting bracket, in order to remove the rotor

    1. Use a siphon or clean turkey baster to remove about half of the brake fluid from the master cylinder.
    2. Raise and safely support the vehicle and remove the tire/wheel assembly.
    3. Remove the caliper mounting bolts, then lift the caliper assembly away from the brake rotor.
    4. Use a suitable piece of wire to suspend the caliper assembly. This will prevent the weight of the caliper from being supported by the brake flex hose which will damage the hose.
    5. Once the caliper body and brake pads are removed, unfasten the caliper bracket mounting bolts, then remove the bracket from the rotor.
    6. Remove the rotor retaining screws.
    7. Remove the brake rotor by pulling it straight off the wheel mounting studs or if seized in place, remove the stubborn brake rotor by threading in two 8 x 1.25mm bolts, two turns at a time until the brake rotor is released.
    To install:
    1. If necessary, completely retract the piston into the caliper using a large C-clamp or other suitable tool as provided in the front disc brake pad replacement procedures in this section.
    2. Install the brake rotor onto the wheel hub and tighten the mounting screws.
    3. Install the caliper mounting bracket and secure with the retaining bolts.
    4. Install the caliper and pad assembly over the brake rotor and mounting bracket and install the mounting bolts.
    5. Fill the master cylinder to the proper level with fresh brake fluid.
    6. Install the tire/wheel assembly and lower the vehicle.
    7. Pump the brake pedal until the brake pads are seated and a firm pedal is achieved before attempting to move the vehicle.
    CAUTION Do not move the vehicle until a firm pedal is obtained.

    1. Road test the vehicle to check for proper brake operation.

    Raise And Support Truck, Remove Wheel, Remove 2 Bolts Holding Brake Caliper On , Use Large "C" Clamp to Push Piston IN to Open up Space for New Pads Install Pads Reverse of How They came Out, Place Caliper Onto Rotor / Ancor and Install 2 Bolts.--------Do This ONE AT A TIME and After Completion Start Engine and Softly PUMP Brake Pedal Untill It Returns to Normal Hight.     1992 cavalier brakes hard when not running soft when started changed the booster (used) pads are good shape,rotors ok, changed master(used) Bleeded them still the same. maybe new rotors and pads? vacume...


    Bad vacum or a bad master.... rotor and pad would have no affect on petal feel. never use used parts in a brake system, new or remanufactured only!!

    ABS brakes


    You may have air in the hydraulic system. Bleeding the system should restore the firmness. If not, then the master cylinder needs replacing.
