The check engine light will not come on if there is a problem with fluids. The check engine light will illuminate if there is a fault with a senor, a computer controlled device, or a computer monitored system. There are literally thousands of possibilities that can turn on the check engine light.

The first thing that needs to be done is to scan the computer to see what codes are present. This will help narrow down the possibilities.

Some common problems are EGR codes and Evap codes.

What are the most common reasons a check engine light comes on?

There is only one reason why the engine check light will be switched on - that is when the engine management system records a fault that could affect the correct regulation of the exhaust emissions though that could have many possible causes.

Regarding older vehicles a common problem is the CAT reaching the end of it's life for a variety of reasons - often because the fuelling has become inaccurate due to bad injectors and various sensors becoming "tired".
Sometimes high oil consumption will be a significant factor or a defective head gasket dumping coolant into the cylinders...

Check your transmission fluid. This is a common transmission code. Torque converter clutch not locking up. You may or may not notice a difference in the driving. but defininately dont let the issue go without further investigation. the result in this light could cost you a transmission if you drive it too long without repair.

1999 mk3 golf. Car shifts fine when cold. When engine is at normal temp., gets increasingly harder to shift into gear. Especially 1st and 2nd.

Hello,
The most common cause for what you have described is low transmission fluid.
The reason being, when the car has been sitting for a while, the fluid runs back down into the transmission pan.
So, at start up, there's enough fluid in the pan for the pump to work correctly, but, as the fluid is pumped back up into yhe transmission there's less fluid in the pan for the pump.

Be very careful not to overfil the transmission, this can trigger the, " check engine light ".

I hope this help you.
Thanks, Donnie

2001 dodge 1500 4x4

did you drain the fluid, it may have lots of metal and be really gummed up causing it to over heat and burn off. Aside from that the most commonly overlooked "check engine" proplem is the O2 sensors, there should be 2 of them
