Question about Volkswagen Camper

73 vw van

I just purchased this van and the previous owner said he just put on a new elec fuel pump and cleaned the carb. I can prime the carb and get it to run for about 10 seconds. the pump is working. the previous owner stated that he thought the new fuel pump may have too much psi. any suggestions? Do I need to buy a lower psi pump? thanks, shannon

You may want to check the fuel filter by taking it off and try blowing through it. if you have blowen through a straw and the filter is harder then that replace it. it is running for 10 seconds because its using the fuel in the carb and then it shuts off right. its not to much pressure but could also be a stuck needle valve in the carb. you should make sure you have fuel going to it first. take the line off and stick it in a bucket and turn on the pump you should get fuel coming out thats good. dont need to run it for more then a couple seconds if nothing comes out the filter is clogged the pickup screen is clogged or the line is clogged. good luck hope this helps

On 94 Isuzu pickup 2.3 liters , I install new fuel pump and filters I have no gas at carb. It's has a mechanical pump. How do I catch prime? Starting fuel starts it then it dies.

I have a diesel van and what I do to prime fuel lines is to connect a fuel hose to the inlet of the filter. Using a fuel container. I know it is a rough rigging but it has kept me from towing my van to the mechanic

Not getting gass but fuel pump works & gas is clean, also it has sat inside for 12 years

Well if the pump works then follow the pump fuel lines to the engine, you will find the fuel filter then replace it and will also see petrol if any in it ,if not pump isent working ,if dirty replace it and blow air back from carby to filter to clean out pipe
,turn on ign fuel should come to filter and then with new filter in turn on fuel and see if any comes to carby if ok it should start and run.
Have a goodday,

Why does my carburetor only run when I prime it?

you will have to remove the mechanical pump and prime it before it will pump fuel. Quickest way if you can put your hands in fuel is to put the pump in a bucket of fuel and work the lever. It will only take a few pumps of the lever to get fuel into the pump. If fuel affects your skin then attach a hose to the inlet side and work the lever. Then when you refit the pump ,make sure that the lever is on the correct side of the cam. After that you will have fuel in the carby fairly quickly (30 secs of cranking or less)

73 vw will not idle

Well. I dont know much about vw's or carb engines, but my guess is that your engine is suffocating from a lack of fuel, which leads me to believe the carb needs cleaning. Try changing a fuel filter too. Hope this helps

When I get stuck in traffic in real hot weather I get a vapor lock and I just run out of fuel to the carburetor. The engine will restart if you prime the carburetor 1985 Chevrolet C 3500

Not an expert here but hope this helps. I had an 85 GMC Van and the previous owner had installed an electric fuel pump in engine compartment. I too would stall when hot. I finally relocated fuel pump to underneath the van and it ran cool and no more vapor locks.

Howto install weber carb

Remove the old carb.  Bolt the new carb and gasket onto the manifold.  Hook up the fuel line and clamp.  Thread the throttle cable through the linkage and tighten.  Have someone hold the gas pedal to the floor, look inside the carb and make sure the throttle plate inside the carb is full open.  Next, wire in the electric choke, this should just clip on.
Now after the engine is running and warmed up...adjust the mixture and idle speed adjustments on the side of the carb.  Is this a two barreled cab and does it have a manual choke?

I have a 1981 Toyota 4WD with a 22r engine. Truck has been sitting up for about 8mos. I purchased it and got it home. The only way I can start if is by pouring gas in carb. I have replaced all vac lines...

check the fuel pump, maybe it is not working. if you put a new accelerator pump, I wonder if it's same as the fuel pump. if so, maybe you need to rebuild your carb, clean the small fuel line in the carb, something block there.
