Question about 1987 Jeep Wrangler

I would like to do an engine swap. I have an 1987 jeep wrangler 4.2l inline six with the 5 speed manual transmission. I would like to swap in a diesel engine that gets 40 to 50 miles per gallon. Is this possible? if so what would it require?

Anything is possible and you could use a later model cheroke diesel motor or even a ford diesel out of a late model transit but to tell you the truth the money it will cost you it will not equal the amount you will save unless you keep the car for 20years,
the best option in my opinion would be to get a good lpg gas kit fitted with the right tune you will easily get that fuel consumption and it will be alot cheaper up front and in the long run.

Well besides a ton of work. what is the diesel engine. i didnt think that jeep made to many of those if any. you are better off getting a truck that already is a diesel and save alot of time and money. which in the long run could be cheaper to buy a used truck that runs.
as for the swap you may have to buy need motor mounts or have special ones made to fit the mounts. then you got the fuel system and tank and since the diesel is alot more pressure you will have to change the lines and find a pump that will work, more money. then you need to get the wire harness changed to efi to the diesel and hope it works after modify to fix the truck. the if you moved to motor and trany from the stuck postion you will need new driveshafts. and then you got the radiator to get changed and if the new motor wieghts more you may have to change to springs in the front to keep the old ride hieght. told you it would be a ton of work.

Manual Transmission
The level of lubricant in the transmission should be maintained at the filler hole on all manual transmissions. This hole is on the right side. When you check the level in the transmission, make sure that the vehicle is level so that you get a true reading. When you remove the filler plug, lubricant should run out of the hole. Replace the plug quickly for a minimum loss of lubricant. If lubricant does not run out of the hole when the plug is removed, lubricant should be added until it does. Replace the plug as soon as the lubricant reaches the level of the hole.

DRAIN AND REFILL
Remove the drain plug which is at the bottom of the transmission. Allow all the lubricant to run out before replacing the plug. Replace the case with the correct viscosity oil. All manual transmissions use SAE 75W-90 API quality Grade GL-5 gear lubricant. Tighten the fill hole plug to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm).

Where can i find the transmission model number for my 95 jeep grandcherokee lerado the transmission is not original it has been replaced with a diferent one 2 times so just need to know where to find the...

The first year of the Grand Cherokee (ZJ), the AX-15 was rare option only with the 4.0L engine. The AX-15 is still used in TJs and XJs with the 4.0L engine.
AX-5: The AX-5 (and AX-4, the non-overdrive version) is a light duty 5 speed manual transmission. It was used in all Wranglers from 1987 equipped with the 2.5L I4 engine. It was also used in Cherokees (XJ) and Comanches (MJ) with the 2.8L V6 and 2.5L I4.

TF727: The TF 727 is a heavy duty 3 speed automatic used in full sized Jeeps (SJs and J series pickups) from 1980-1983. From 1984-1992 the 727 was only used in these trucks with the AMC 360 V8.
999: The 999 is a medium duty 3 speed automatic used in CJs from 1980-1986. It was also used in 1984-1990 SJs and J pickups with the 4.2L engine, in the YJ from 1987-1991 with the 2.5L and 4.2L engine, and in the XJ and MJ through 1986.
904,909: The 904 and 909 are light duty 3 speed automatic used in CJs from 1980-1986 only with the I4 engine. It was also used during this time period with XJs and MJs with the I4 and V6 engine. The 909 is a 904 with a lock-up torque converter.
SR-4, T-4: The SR-4 and T-4 are light duty four speed manual transmissions used in CJs from 1980 until 1986.
T-176, T-177, T-178: The T-176, T-177, and T-178 are a medium duty four speed manual transmission used in Jeep CJs, SJs, and J pickups from 1980-1986.
T-150: The T-150 is the 3 speed manual transmission that was used in CJs from 1976 to 1979.
T-18: The T-18 is a heavy duty four speed used in Jeeps from 1971 until 1981. It was only used in the CJ from 1971-1979.
T-15: The T-15 was used only in V8 equipped CJs and Jeep trucks from 1972 to 1975.
TH400: The TH 400 is a heavy duty three speed automatic that was used in CJs with the BW 13-39 transfer case from 1976-1979. The TH 400 was also used in full sized Jeeps (SJs and J series pickups) from the late 60s until 1979.
T-14: he T-14 is a three speed transmission used with the "Dauntless" Buick V6 and AMC I6 from 1967 to 1975.
T-86: The T-86 is one of the three speeds used with the many CJs and Jeepster Commandos with the "Dauntless" Buick V6.
T-98: The T-98 varies only slightly from the T-18. It was used from the 50s until 1970 in different Jeeps.
T-90: The T-90 was the standard three speed for CJ and their military counterparts built from 1945 until 1971. It was also the standard transmission for Willys Wagons, Willys Pickups, FC trucks, and Jeepster/Commandos during this time period.

Hello grega1967, your Jeep Wrangler came from the factory with gear oil in the axles and manual transmission, but the transfer case uses transmission fluid. It is a NP231 and your axles are Dana 30 in the front and Dana 35 in the rear. They should have a 4.10 gear ratio due to you having a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder.

The redesigned WJ 1999 Grand Cherokee shared just 127 parts with its predecessor. The structure was stiffened by PorscheEngineering for sharper steering and lighter weight. The spare tire wasrelocated from the side of the cargo compartment to under the floor togreat relief of owners. The two heavy pushrod V8 engines were replaced by chrysler's first clean sheet V8 since the 60's (SOHC aluminium heads, plastic intake), Chrysler's then-new PowerTech. Although this engine produced less torquethan both previous V8s, it was lighter and got much better fuel economyand provided similar on road performance figures (the 23 gallon fueltank was replaced with one of a 20.5 gallon capacity). The Inline 6engine was also updated in 1999. 10 horsepower (7.5 kW) was added byredesigning the intake manifold. The manual transmission was dropped with this model.
While other Jeep vehicles used the Mopar 5 x 4.5 bolt circle, thiswas the first Jeep following the 1987 Chrysler buyout to receive awider bolt pattern — 5 x 5. The 5 x 5 bolt pattern (also 5 x 127 mm),although common to GM rear wheel drive vehicles and light dutytrucks/vans, has spread beyond its use with GM (and Ford with their 1973 to 1978 LTDs and Lincolns). Chrysler first used the 5 x 5 pattern on full-size half-ton Dodge Ram pickups and Dodge Ramcharger SUVs in 1986.
A notable feature available in this generation was the automatic four wheel drive option called Quadra-Drive II.With three viscous clutches, it was one of only a few four wheel drivesystems at the time with triple locking differentals, joining thecontemporary Mercedes Gelandewagen, Mercedes Unimog and Magna SteyrPinzgauer, and the only one of the four with fully automatic operation,although the axle differentials could not be manually locked like inthe other three vehicles.
The 45RFE and 545RFE automatic transmission in the WJ was notable. It included three planetary gearsets rather than the two normally used in a four-speed automatic. Thisgave it six theoretical speeds, and it would have been the firstsix-speed transmission ever produced in volume, but it was programmedto only use five of these ratios. Four were used for upshifts, with adifferent second gear for downshifts. Although five of the six ratioswere used, Chrysler decided to call it a "4-speed automatic". In 2001,the programming was changed to make use of all six ratios. Rather thanhave six forward gears, the transmission was programmed to act as afive-speed with the alternate second gear for downshifts. The RPM at70 miles per hour (110 km/h) on a 545RFE is 2000 rpm, 200 rpm less thanthe 45RFE programming. 1999 and 2000 model year WJ owners can havetheir 45RFE transmission's programming flashed to enable the extra gearas both transmissions are physically the same. The 42RE 4-speedautomatic remained the transmission for the Inline 6 engine. It was notchanged from the previous model Grand Cherokee's.
